Review: The Victories #8

Written by Guest Contributor: Jordan North The Victories is keeping up the high-octane with "Posthuman" part 3. Throwing us into the midst of a war between the shadowy "Advisors" and the Champions that is sure to rock Avon-Oeming's fiction to its core.

This issue stays pretty straightforward, with most of the 27 pages serving to show us how our heroes are coping fighting their way out of enslavement. Many heroes get their time to shine and kick some ass with a few exchanges Faustus has with a pair of super powered runts who have screwed him over in the past being the standout (“Who are you?” ,“Eddie Murphy dammit-- just hold on!”) its funny stuff, and nice and refreshing to see a joke in that style make it into the pages of The Victories.

The Victories #8 CoverBesides that we get an inside look at the beliefs and dreams of the Advisors and their warped ideas surrounding the "Visitors" that helped spawn humanity and could be the key to world domination and are treated to a really cool epilogue that details Metatron's indoctrination into the dark side from the perspective of him and the bad guys. Its good storytelling all over, and of course it all looks awesome. Avon Oeming's artwork compliments his story in the way that only a project where the artist and writer are the same man could, with art blending seamlessly into story in a slick-as-hell way that feels totally natural and in sync, and the rendering of characters that look like vase art adding a highly stylish adult cartoon vibe to it all. Pair that with splendid coloring by Nick Filardi and you have a book that's as fun to look at as to read.

The Victories never lets me down, and that's what's so great about it. Its characters are consistently awesome, along with the overall plot and art and the quality never really waivers. Sprinkle on the fact that Michael Avon Oeming has some of the biggest balls in comic story telling these days and writes his stories fearlessly and you have a solid comic that never leaves my pull list.
