Rat Queens issue six, kicks off a new story, but at the same time it doesn’t feel like a new story arc. The issue picks off where our adventures left off and the consequences of their epic celebration after taking out the orc army and revealing that all the ladies except for Dee had a great time. I couldn’t help but feel bad for her because she was the only that didn’t get any happiness after an epic celebration. One by one the ladies come down with their hookups except for Dee, and Hannah. Once Hannah gets down to breakfast you can tell that she is a foul mood and doesn’t want to talk about the night, but Violet did notice who she had hooked up with because she had heard Hannah and Sawyer going at it. The ladies then go about dissecting Hannah and asking her why she had hooked up with Saywer only to be interrupted by a message from the Mayor of Palisades.
The ladies rush down to the Mayor’s office apologizing for ripping off the statues penis, and trying to blame the other queens for the prank gone wrong, but the Mayor didn’t really care. He was actually pleased that it happened because a group of conservative ladies were finally please that it was at least “censored.” This made me chuckle quite a bit as the book kept its one of a kind humor in the book. The Mayor actually wanted to congratulate the Queens for a job well done and rewards the Queens. The Mayor then gives the Queens another mission, now that the Queens have earned a reputation as being Heroes.
The transition from the new story arc to the previous feels so seamless that you really don’t feel like it’s a new story, rather than it feels like your still in the same arc. The issues also does a great job of giving us more details about some of the characters, particularly Dee’s character and her history, which really has me interested because she seems to have a lot of issues although she seems to be the more stable of the bunch aside from Violet.
The issue also touches on Hannah’s past with Sawyer and I love how Weibe really hashes this up with the ladies when they are walking towards their mission. It shows their more girly side of the Queens rather than their usual kick ass exterior that these ladies portray. And the reveal in the end… talk about WTF.
Overall, Rat Queens is still a solid book that although it starts a new arc, it didn’t feel that way at all. The book still delivers in great storytelling, humor and character development and as the last arc, I am all in for this arc.
