Review: Skullkickers #29

The last issue of Skullkickers really rebounded this storyline for me. Up until then I was not having the best time with a series I usually can’t wait to read and enjoy, but it did rebound. That said I still kind of wondered what I would get with this issue that closes out the story arc. There is not a whole lot to say about the issue because it’s a battle. Our heroes and their doppelgangers from other dimensions are fighting as best they can, but they’re getting their asses kicked. Meanwhile Dead Rolf makes it underneath the foot of the Wartyke and gets the helmet on his head so that he can control it. What follows is the one of the best songs to ever come from a comic book. It’s funny; it’s catchy and keeps the pacing of the story right on track. There’s a great cliffhanger that sets up for the next arc perfectly.

Skullkickers29_Cover copy 2While there isn’t a lot of story per say it’s still an enjoyable issue with the usual Skullkickers charm. Jim Zub really just delivers the action and let’s Edwin Huang go nuts on art.

Speaking of Huang, he keeps the action clean and easy to follow. When the song kicks in there’s a steady flow to the action. The drop kick that Rolf gives with the Wartyke is a thing of beauty so look for that. Dead Rolf has a great look to him as he wears the smashed crown and is still all smashed up himself. He’s looking very dead right now and it’s funny to look at because it’s so gross.

When a story line wraps up with giants fighting it’s hard not to like it. I’ve read issue of Godzilla that didn’t have this much action and so it’s sometimes nice just to see a conflict come to a close with fisticuffs when fisticuffs are the only answers. Well done team, looking forward to next month.
