Review: The Double Life of Miranda Turner #4

It’s been a minute since we last saw The Double Life of Miranda Turner, but if you’ve read any MonkeyBrain title then you know that sometimes you have to wait a while to get the next issue. Hell for only a buck an issue I don’t mind and it sure doesn’t change the enjoyment level of this issue. There isn’t a lot to say about this issue that isn’t a spoiler so I’ll avoid that.

The_Double_Life_of_Miranda_Turner_04-1This issue, as the cover alludes, reveals how Lindy died. Up until this point we just knew that she was dead and that her sister Miranda was investigating, while also taking on the Cat persona that her sister had. That’s really all I can say about the story.

I liked both sister’s origins and that they’re very different from each other. The creative team introduces an interesting element in this issue, but it also made it pretty clear what the motivation was for the murderer even if our characters couldn’t see it. That was also kind of bothersome at the same time because their dialogue presents it and so the fact that they can’t see what’s right in front of them is a disappointing character flaw.

The only other thing that was perhaps not for me was how unemotional Miranda was when initially approached by her sister’s ghost. She never grieved, she just wanted to become a super hero and it really seemed like a missed opportunity to inject a little heart into this otherwise lighthearted and comical superhero story. It could be that the creators just wanted to keep it light, but then maybe the subject should have been broached differently.

The art continues to be fantastic and just a treat to look at. The coloring gives the story a lot of its personality and allows it to stand out from other superhero titles. It’s very golden age vintage because of the coloring and I like that.

The issue is definitely just a stepping stone to a larger chapter of the story, but it’s entertaining and definitely worth checking out even if you’re new to the series. The creative team seems to be on track so I doubt we’ll be waiting long for the next few issues.
