Bryan Lee O’Malley’s first foray into monthly writing proved to be successful with the launch of Snotgirl with Leslie Hung on art duties. Admittedly, I’m a fan of O’Malley’s work, but damn if I wasn’t scared that this title would flop and leave me unfulfilled as a reader. To my relief, the series was not only good, but that was awesome. In fact, it is one of the few shining gems in Image’s lineup at the moment. It doesn’t hurt that Hung’s artwork is incredible and different than the norm as well.
The story is still unraveling and other than the fact that it’s about allergies and the world of fashion blogging, I can’t be sure what else it’s about at the moment. Other than Lottie of course. It’s a mystery, it’s vague, but whereas a lot of stories fail in both departments, Snotgirl manages to do both with a perfect balance. The other thing it does better than the vast majority of comics? It makes me look forward to grabbing the next month’s issue. Who would have thought a comic about fashion blogging would be one of the best of 2016?
