The Work was as if comics and wrestling had the perfect little baby. The idea of the story is that much like wrestling, all superhero fights and events are fake. They’re created by managers that pull the strings, but do so for the rich to bet on them. The rest of us, the lowly 99%, think it’s real. To use a wrestling term and the title, it’s a work.
Aside from just loving the story and its balance between wrestling lingo and superhero antics, creator Andrew Sebastian Kwan illustrates a beautiful book. He put in a ton of detail that added personality to this story in the way that a wrestler adds personality with their mic skills. Again, it was the perfect beautiful baby just waiting to do a heel turn later in its career. I don’t know if you can even get the issue anymore, but if you can and you love wrestling and comics, then check it out. It’s way better than the shit BOOM! and the WWE are doing.
