The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an already well-established gold mine which has pulled in mass audiences every year since the release of Iron Man in 2008. The total revenue for all 15 films so far is over $4.5 billion before considering inflation, and the model is something that other studios are desperately trying to replicate. DC have arrived late to the party with their extended universe, and Man of Steel was the studio’s first offering in 2013. There is a lot of work to be done to be able to contend with the might of Marvel and their already much-loved characters, but expanding the franchise beyond cinema is one way of attracting wider audiences.
In the past, Marvel aimed to reach beyond its usual demographic of Millennials who make up 68.18% of the fan base, by partnering with Playtech to make online slots. There were slot games based on key characters such as Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, and Spider-Man, but now those games have been pulled due to the studio’s new deal with Disney. Prior to this decision, the games were a great way to attract new viewers who frequent online casinos but may not have been interested in the films before. Now that these games are no longer in circulation, there is an opportunity for DC to pounce.
Playtech have now struck a new deal with DC so that they can continue to make superhero slots, but this time with a different range of characters. A lot of top real money online slots sites have offered players Microgaming’s Dark Knight Slot in the past, which has become one of the most popular games on the market. Now that Playtech owns the rights to Batman this slot will be discontinued as well, but the company will doubtlessly create its own game based on the caped crusader. Batman games are always hits, with the success of Batman: Arkham Knight being a prime example (see video above). Just as Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice really kick-started the DCE Universe, surely Playtech will look to do the same with the superhero slots and make a Batman-based game first.
Not only will the slot games increase viewing figures for the DC movies, they will also provide fans with a platform to enjoy the characters such as Superman or Wonderwoman in a different way. From Playtech’s perspective, they will be hoping that these characters can help them challenge some of the most popular slots on the market, such as Mega Moolah. In Mega Moolah online slot reviews authors often mention the whopping progressive jackpot, which is something that Playtech might look to include in the DC games.
This deal with Playtech is definitely a step in the right direction for DC as the studio seeks to knock Marvel off its perch. Offering these games along with console adventures like Injustice 2 should help to massively increase viewing figures for future films.
