Kaede might be the most dynamic character in the show so far, as she makes her introduction in episode 3. Sora takes the day off when he catches a cold and Mii- kun is left in charge to make him feel better. We also learn something new about the bandage wrapped mummy that leaves us with confusion.

Sora may be the main character for this show, but it makes it hard for him to be a likable character when his indulging independence makes it hard to. We understand that he is left with many chores and household duties with his dad being away, but it's excessive to the point he doesn’t feel like a high school kid. Meanwhile, he has a defenseless mummy to take care of unlike his dog Pochi. The exaggeration of helplesness is taken further when Mii-kun could not withstand being apart from Sora and the mummy dries up with his tears and at the brink of death. Mii-Kun immediently recovers when Sora jumps out of bedrest to tend to him. The mystery girl that spends most of her time in her room is at last introduced. Kaede is a sweetheart and quirky with a second personality when she puts on her glasses. she transforms into a flirtatious and confident girl, doing things she wouldn’t normally do.  

This show continues to be slow paced with its story development and is incredibly laid back about it. Perhaps new discoveries about the mummy could keep us sticking around for each episode, but we’re just left with confusion and wondering. At least one discovery is made when Mii-Kun catches a cold from Sora and strangely recovers by burying himself under dirt for a cool minute and springing out from underground, completely clean and untouched of dirt. I had a compilation of questions after this. Looking past the confusion in this episode, I was touched by Sora’s flashback when he was a little boy grieving over a small bird that died in his palms. Sora was afraid he would lose Mii-Kun when caught his cold and didn’t want to experience that pain again. It was a warm touch to this episode that was unexpected.

How to Keep a Mummy relies heavily on the cuteness aspect and doesn’t put time in focusing on the rest of the characters. It's difficult for us to like any character in the show when the main focus is mostly on Mii-Kun. This isn’t a show you’ll be looking forward to watching ever week, but we hope to see it progress and succeed and for the time being, we’ll let it ride until the end and have a complete review for its season when that time comes.
