This episode of KonoSuba 2 is fairly interesting in that it acts like the midpoint conclusion of the story. Everyone that watches a lot of anime knows what midpoint I’m referring to as there’s usually a shift in the story from that point on.
There’s some genius in the way the first five episodes have been set up and executed because everything is become interwoven in the story. A new monster has taken up residence in the dungeon that Kazuma and Aqua cleared out and now they’re being asked to figure out what’s going on. We learn that the ward that Aqua placed is repellent for demons meaning their group is once again the cause of demons attacking. The storyline with Kazuma and Darkness plays out a little more here and affects the story as well as Megumin’s increased explosion powers. Frankly, I should have seen it all building and folding in on itself, but I missed it.
Most of the story is again Kazuma and Darkness who are the only two that go into the dungeon. After being left by Kazuma last time, Aqua is now extremely afraid of dungeons which is hilarious. The duo finds the new keeper of the dungeon, and he’s another knight/commander in the Devil King’s army. He’s ridiculous. He also lives through a mask that attaches to Darkness’ face. The more she struggles, the more pain is inflicted upon her… so she’s in heaven for most of the episode and when Kazuma tries to hurry and get to Aqua to have the mask exorcised Darkness takes the body back over to tell him not to rush.
I won’t spoil the rest, and there’s so many jokes and so much going on it’s impossible to spoil, but it does wrap up the storyline that started the season, and that was nice. I didn’t want to see Kazuma proving his innocence for the rest of the season. The episode had a bit of heart, a ton of humor and may have made me laugh more than the fourth episode.
The animation was fantastic as well. There’s one particular scene that I won’t spoil, that looked incredible. The animation studio put in a lot of effort and work on this episode which made it stand out from the rest of the season. I don’t know why there wasn’t as much effort put into the opening, but I’ve completed stopped caring nor do I spend any time watching it. Also, I don’t recall if I’ve talked about the music on the show… it’s terrible. I hate it a lot, but hey it’s to be expected a little. It’s just so light and breezy that it doesn’t match the tone of the show which might be the joke, but it’s not a very funny joke.
I’m looking forward to more of KonoSuba and will once again be disappointed when the season is over, and I no longer have a solid comedy to laugh at weekly. Unsurprisingly, this has been my favorite show from the current season/cour.
