Koro-sensei Quest! is blatantly a rip-off of Dragon Quest; I am sure the creators could have thought of something a little more distinctive, but beggars can't be choosers. There was no doubt in my mind that I would watch the spinoff because I thoroughly enjoyed the original series. Initially, I was surprised to have the chance to see the comical Koro-sensei and his fellow pupils in action once again; however, this surprise did not turn out as pleasant as I previously hoped. I am aware of how most spinoffs work, but I cannot say that I was impressed with the setup of this one.
The series features all the original characters from Assassination Classroom. However, the students in class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Academy are supposedly inferior to other heroes because they have bugs. These bugs are essentially the student’s quirky abilities, for instance being able to purchase the front half of a suit or a student’s ability to equip themselves with bathroom tools, and so forth is a bug. The students of class 3-E assignment are to learn the necessary skills from Koro-sensei, while mastering how to use their buggy abilities, in order to defeat him.
My biggest letdown was the weak sense of humor injected throughout the show. The original Assassination Classroom series was effortlessly funny; the humor felt natural and not at all contrived. There were several moments in the spinoff, however, where I felt the characters were making funny comments or remarks for the sake of making audiences laugh. Although, I am a stickler for spontaneity, I am willing to admit that audiences will get the intended laughs out of watching this show.
