Review: Pregnant Bitches of War #1
I think I now know how some people feel when they say “Comic Bastards.” Granted, Pregnant Bitches of War is much more in your face, but it’s never not fun to say. I’m going to start by saying I liked the issue, but I probably would have enjoyed it regardless. It’s called PREGNANT BITCHES OF WAR! If that doesn’t make you laugh then comedy is dead and we should just blow up the world. Hell, if you don’t laugh at least once while reading this book it’s a nuclear winter for all of us. This is a story about time travel… ha! Seriously it’s about time travel, but I doubt anyone reading this without having read the book, would have seen that coming. It begins with a group meeting called “Adventures in Pregnancy” in which six women are being paid to attend the group. We go around the room and meet each woman as they give their name and tell at least one thing they’ve been doing since becoming pregnant. We meet a variety of characters including the trophy wife, the country bumpkin, an immigrant, a woman that may or not be a man in disguise and our main character Birdie Disantos. Birdie is ex-military and says that she was tossed out of the Army after being raped by her commanding officer. Okay that part wasn’t funny, but it explained why Birdie is hard as fuck and throws herself down stairs.
Meanwhile, one hundred years in the past, Nicolas Tesla is working on a time machine that will fuck up all of their lives. After an argument breaks out the women stop noticing that their being transported until they arrive in the past with guns pointed at them. Some men are there for the black diamond that Tesla stole for his time machine. He adjusts the frequency and they travel further forward and are just in time for World War I. That’s when the story gets crazy. I know right? That’s when it gets crazy.
This story is hilarious and very entertaining. It knows what it is and because of that you should take everything as it is. If it’s goofy then it’s meant to be, if it’s serious then it’s meant to be. Is the story the most amazing thing in the world? Yes, but mostly because it’s completely nuts. It’s the weirdest story involving time travel ever, but it was also one of the most entertaining comics I’ve ever read. Additionally, the characters are great. Though I outlined them as their character tropes/stereotypes, they play to them well and are very memorable.
The art is the perfect fit for the story. Actually having Rob Guillory drawing the cover is the perfect comparison for the interior art. The interior’s a grittier style, but it definitely looks like something that could hang out with Chew or The End Time of Ben and Bram. I liked the story and the fact that the characters were basically ugly or average looking. I mean that’s just life right? Staring at average or ugly people. The facial expressions are a huge part of the success of the story and add a lot to the physical humor of the story.
For only a dollar you should already own this issue. It’s definitely one of the best purchases I’ve made this week. Usually I’d be like, “this book probably isn’t for everyone” or blah, blah, blah. It’s a funny book that makes fun of basically everything. What’s not to love and enjoy about it? If you need another reason to buy it then just re-read the title until your head finds its way out of your ass.
