Worst of 2016: Masamune-kun’s Revenge
By Dustin Cabeal
I don’t particularly set out to read bad manga. It’s not quite like comics in which I read a ton of it, and I’m going to come across bad and good. It does make it all the more painful when I do read a manga that I don’t enjoy. Chiefly if I’ve set out to review it… because then I have to finish reading it.
Masamune-kun’s Revenge is about a high school that was once fat and has sought out revenge on a woman that gave him the nickname “pig legs.” I could have the name wrong, but it was pig something. The premise isn’t terrible until you do the math. This porky elementary student spent years of his youth getting slim and attractive to get revenge and his plot was to make her fall in love with him so he could be like, “surprise pig legs, motherfucker!” It’s just stupid. Really his plan is to give her a terrible nickname back. The entire thing is a mess and even when it has charming moments it collapses under the weight of its own nonsense. I can tolerate a lot of bullshit in manga, but a premise based on a kid getting slim and then not realizing he’s slim for like five fucking years is just too much. Enjoy the anime next year; I’m sure it’ll be dreadful as well.
