Other than Archer, Regular Show is my favorite animated series on TV right now. To those who love the show, we all know Skips is a mysterious, immortal yeti who deals with the supernatural in order to keep Mordecai, Rigby, and the gang safe. This fourth issue of Regular Show: Skips is no exception. I’m jumping into the series with this issue, but I think this anyone could read this issue by itself and not be confused. After reading it I definitely want to go back through the first three issues. Mordecai, Rigby, Benson, and Skips are all on vacation which is pretty interesting considering that most of the episodes focus on life at the park. Skips has befriended a member of the Time Police, and they now have a plot to reverse a time loop. They break out the best Time Police gear that they have including the Time Watch (used to correct quick mistakes by being able to reset time a few seconds up to a few hours), the Precognition Band (alerts you when someone’s about to do something stupid…this one will come in handy), and their secret weapon…a pencil. To write down notes that could save the world.
At this point, Mordecai, Rigby and Benson left the merch stand that Skips and his Time Police friend were at and are about to check in for a hiking tour. Mordecai and Rigby get excited when they hear another tour guide talking about geysers since they’ll probably explode. Skips and the Time Police cop catch up with the gang, and Skips tells them that this is their tour guide, “Ranger Ted.” “Ranger Ted” and Skip’s mission is to keep Mordecai and Rigby away from the geysers in order for everything to go back to normal. Knowing those two slackers though, that’s obviously a hard task considering most of the time in the show if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.
Before I read this issue I was skeptical about the art, since it obviously wouldn’t be the same as the show. However, I feel like Mad Rupert did a great job with staying true to the TV show while adding her own flair and comic styling too it. Mad also handles the writing too, which I felt was very strong. This is one of those books you’ll breeze through and want to re-read again. The whole story is interesting as well, there didn’t seem to be any filler. As anyone would probably guess, there’s a good amount of humor in here as well and things you’ve come to expect from the show such as Mordecai’s “Yeauhh” and Benson’s empty although furious threats to fire Mordecai and Rigby. It’s also worth mentioning the coloring by Whitney Cogar are great. The colors really pop and bring the characters and their surroundings to life.
Sometimes I think “all-ages” should really mean “children’s”, but this comic can definitely be enjoyed by anyone who’s a fan of quirky characters and even weirder stories.
