Welcome to Free Comic Book Day! Instead of our usual lengthy reviews, we’ll be presenting more of a mini-review for some of FCBD issues. With that said, the scoring is also going to work a bit differently. Each book gets one of three scores: Pick It Up, Borrow a Friends If They Get It, Pass on It. Let’s begin!
Ok so I am originally from Hartville, OH. So I spent my life going up in Canton. For those of you don’t this, Canton is home to the Football Hall of Fame. About the only thing Canton has going for them. I was excited to open the first page of this comic and witness the bridge built in honor of the Hall of Fame. Not a very exciting bridge but it pays homage to it.
The first thing, Ish, our main character asks for is tickets to a Cleveland Brown’s game. Look, not even people in Cleveland want tickets to a Brown’s game. They are bad, with hopes each year of their comeback. Anyway, it made me laugh out loud when seeing it in the comic. It is rumored that Brown’s fans are the most dedicated fans in football. Who knows? We did throw food (aka beer bottles) at the players one game because we were so disappointed in the results. That shows dedication right…?
I can’t help but enjoy this comic. It is awesome how they relate two fields of interest into one. I love football and seeing my favorite player, Matthew Stafford helping to stop evil forces is kind of cool. Ok so we have Ish who has just moved to Canton in order to be one with his inner football super powers. He is pretty young, probably around 12, and he goes around to different stadiums stopping robots from plotting explosions and such against the players and fans. Ish’s headquarters is the Football Hall of Fame where he is trained by an old man. His parents know about this operation and completely understand his duties. Again, another reason why kids would love this comic. They can enjoy reading a comic about a super kid getting to meet all these NFL big shots and Ish doesn’t have to keep it a secret.
Ish starts his Saturday like any other kid, dad brings home lunch while mom tells Ish he has to do his homework before anything else. Ish soon gets whisked off to the HoF in order to save the San Fran’s stadium from Botz, the evil robots. Ish wears a suit that gives him superpowers. The suit looks like a robot football uniform. He usually fights alongside with the teams’ mascot. The 49ers happens to be an older gold rush man. Ish has been fighting these Botz for some time, so we know that they are probably lead by some bigger power.
The story is cute and sweet. If you have kids or happen to know any of these strange creatures then you should take them to FCBD and put this one on your list. I haven’t read too many comics aimed at kids but I can say this one is going to be a nice alternative. Anything to get kids into reading is awesome in my book. Comics can provide that skill for children. It doesn’t have to stop there either. We can read comics through our whole lives and be much better creators, thinkers, readers, and just cooler around and then finally working for a comic blog that makes you smile every time talking about it.
Score: Pick It Up! (4/5)
