Tsuki ga Kirei is a very distinct romance series in that both protagonists become aware of each other simultaneously. Often in traditional romance series, the male character or female character – depending on the demographic – becomes interested first, before the subject of their affection reciprocates or rejects their feelings. It is very rare in romance series for the protagonists to have mutual feelings at the beginning and it is usually at least halfway or near the end of the series when the characters admit that they have feelings for each other. Typically, romance series conclude with the main characters becoming a couple or entering a close relationship.
In Tsuki ga Kirei, the main protagonists, Kotarou Azumi and Akane Mizuno acknowledge each other but refrain from speaking to each other until the second episode. The two are awkward around each other but share similar traits in that they are equally determined to succeed when it comes to their clubs. By the end of the second episode, it feels as if the two have moved from being mere acquaintances to something more. Although the two are not overtly close to one another in front of their friends, they maintain a neither so distant nor intimate relationship through line, an instant communication app. In episode three, their relationship appears to be much closer than it was in the last episode. They have not confessed their feelings, however, it is as clear as day that the two have a special bond; they are attentive to one another and offer each other encouragement through the line. The beauty of their relationship derives from the fact that theirs is an exclusive one. Despite their awkward start, the two have already developed a close-knit relationship. So far, the show’s depiction of young love is simple, sweet, realistic, and relatable. It is the small things, like Kotarou locating Akane’s plushie and Akane yearning to tell Kotarou how the track meet went, that brings the two closer.
It should be interesting to see how these two develop as a couple and as individuals as the series progresses.
