Review: The Clay People: Colossus (One-shot)

By Dustin Cabeal

I had no idea that this comic was based on a song. I didn’t know there was a band called The Clay People either. I learned both things at the end of the comic and while it didn’t change anything for me, it may be information that another reader could use before deciding to purchase this one-shot from Top Cow.

I have read this story in different forms, with different lead characters dozens of times. There is something to this story that is searching for an interesting outlet, and I can see the broad appeal to using it. Afterall a clay golem that Jewish people can use for justice/revenge and stems back to World War II feels like a treasure trove of potential stories. Yet, they all pretty much end up like this one-shot.

Review: Bonehead #2

By Dustin Cabeal

Bonehead is one of those comics that I’m merely glad it exists. It has some rough edges for sure, but setting and design of the world is intriguing. The plot is still alluding us; sure we have the basic idea of everything, but the presented end goal is far in the future barring the question of where’s this arc going?

Review: Bonehead #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Bonehead was a surprisingly entertaining first issue. It was also confusing in that by the end of it, you’re unlikely to understand the lay of the land and the point of the story. Not that, that must be 100% established in the first issue, just that it was lacking a bit too much in Bonehead #1.

Review: Witchblade v2 #1

By Justin McCarty

Twenty-two years after the launch of Top Cow’s iconic series hit comic store shelves it has come back. The gauntlet has found a new host. I read the comic off and on for years in high school, following the dark and sexy drama of Sara Pezzini. Turner’s artwork is still so much fun to look at. The whole Witchblade mythos and universe was very cool. Unfortunately, the look was very much a product of its time. The Witchblade has found a new host and the series looks like it completely fits into the contemporary style and tone of comics.  While solid, and while all we have is one issue to go on, it has some work to do to live up to the original. That means I am excited to see how this series shapes up.

Review: God Complex #2

By Jonathan Edwards

For about the first half of God Complex #2, I was finally getting into the story and enjoying myself while it happened. And then, right around the time Seneca visited the Fates, I started losing interest. It’s still a fine issue overall, and the last couple pages do present us with a decent enough cliffhanger. It just doesn't end up being as entertaining as the beginning was. And, I think I know why. Seneca’s character by itself isn’t all that interesting. Neither is his investigation into the deaths of the three Church of the Trinity acolytes. Yet, both work a lot better whenever we see the Rulers getting directly involved. Because they provide great foils for Seneca and vice versa. His moody, neo-noir detective shtick if offset by his fear of getting on their bad side and/or letting them down. And, their sense of superiority, inside information, and larger than life power struggle is offset by the legitimate need for his help, as he can perceive things in a way they can’t. As such, we get an interesting dynamic where, rather than condescend, the Rulers actually attempt to pick Seneca’s brain and enable him, and his both compelled and reluctant to go further and further down the rabbit hole that is his investigation.

Review: Port Of Earth #1

By Justin McCarty

New from Image imprint Top Cow is Port of Earth, a comic with a really interesting twist on an old premise: Aliens finally make the first contact with Earth, but instead of coming with intent to improve how humans treat each other, or with intent to exterminate the human race, they come with a business deal. The aliens in Port of Earth want to onboard Earth to a galaxy-wide network of planets working together for trade. Earth would be a stopping point for ships on their way to other planets. This, of course, complicates things for humans, but the trade seems fair; Earth gets advanced technologies to improve human lives.
