Comics: Where Do I Start? Horror

When I tell people about comics and how involved with them I am, the first thing I usually hear is “I wouldn’t know where to start.” The first question I ask is, “what’s your favorite genre of movies?” The reason I ask this is because a lot of people don’t know how diverse the selection is. There are comics for every genre and even things that you’d never find in another form of entertainment. Today I wanted to focus on horror which is a great gateway genre into comics. I’m going to list a few series, but by no means are they the only ones to check out; they’re merely suggestions and if anyone else has some I hope they’ll list them in the comments. So horror… let’s get killed.

Hack/Slash

Hack-Slash-20_C

Tim Seeley’s horror lovechild is a great place to start for any fan of the “Slasher” genre. The series stars Cassie Hack and Vlad her deformed partner. This series has a long history which started with Devil’s Due Publishing which started at Image Comics, and later moved to Image Comics on its own. Cassie’s backstory is that her mother was a Slasher and now she’s dedicated her life to hunting them all down. The charm of the series is that Cassie and Vlad travel around barely scrapping by in the process. They’re not paid, nor do they have a rich sponsor. They’re two people trying to save the world from monsters. Aside from the gorgeous covers and Cassie’s skimpy outfits, there is plenty to enjoy about this series which concluded not too long ago.

Criminal Macabre/Cal McDonald Mysteries

2658064-03

If you like old school monsters all living in the same world, then you’ll love this long running series. The awesome thing about Criminal Macabre is that while all of the stories fit into a larger narrative, each chapter stands on its own meaning you can start anywhere and get an introduction to the entire world. The main character Cal is a drunk that smokes too much and always has something smart-assy to say. He’s a fantastic character and it’s near impossible to not like him or root for him to win.

Baltimore

BaltimorePlagueShips

Follow Lord Baltimore as he hunts down the vampire that killed his family, in retaliation against him disfiguring him. It's a post WWII world and Europe is experiencing a plague like none seen before. There are monsters and danger everywhere and Baltimore seems to find it all. This Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden gem is not to be missed. It might not fit your definition of a horror story, but trust me it is. It's easy to catch up on and trust me you're going to want to read it from beginning to end its that damn good.

Crossed

432285

If you’re looking for some hardcore horror-ish stories then look no further than Crossed. Imagine a world where every restraint of human nature has been removed. People act on their every whim or desire, but those desires are twisted and sick. That’s the barebones gist of Garth Ennis and Avatar Press’ series. Much like Criminal Macabre, each volume stands-alone, but feeds into the overall creation and narration of the world. If you like gore then this is the book for you.

Jason

Jason_part1_2013-1

That’s right, there’s even indie horror comics. Jason follows Jason Voorhees the slasher killer on the job. It’s basically a work place comedy, but starring Jason and other Slasher icons. It’s short, but awesome so check it out. The second volume was recently funded on Kickstarter so you have that to look forward to as well.

Most Horror Films

1333607-acvr

If it’s a horror film made by a Hollywood studio, then it probably has a comic book. Seriously name one and I bet it’s a comic. Again I stress Hollywood and not the wide selection of underground and indie horror titles. Also some of them are pretty good, but you’ll have to pick and choose for yourself.

--

Well there you go some suggestions or conversation starters at the very least. The problem I had in creating this list is that I’ve read so much horror that I couldn’t remember everything! Also I left out one of the biggest horror titles in comics, but that’s because I don’t think it’s as accessible as everyone pretends that it is… also I gave up on the series on issue 49 so I doubt I’d rave about it as much as others. Please let us know your list or if this list helped you at all.

Teaser For Second Episode of Ghost in the Shell: Arise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=r9CynT8xe4I This one looks way better than the last one. I think that its just because there's more action.

The story of "border:2 Ghost Whispers" takes place after Motoko gains her freedom by separating herself from the military's 501st Secret Unit. Even without Aramaki's suggestion to make her own unit, Motoko begins actions to collect members for her very own unit. As this is going on, someone has hacked into the Logicoma. As she transports the machines in order to check them for abnormalities, she is suddenly attacked by an armed unit. Not long after, she meets up with Batou, the man with the "eye that never sleeps," Ishikawa, a former member of the army who is good at finding information through the internet, and Borma, an electronic warfare expert.

Funimation Reveals Dubbed Trailer For Maken-Ki and Home Release Info

Not the worst dubbing I've heard recently. It could have been the editing and the fact that they only chose boobie scenes to show us, but still not that bad. I dug this show even though it screwed itself with the ending. The Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack will be shipping on November 12th if you're into owning your anime rather than streaming it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_ZAMf3A1IKo&oref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Ffeature%3Dplayer_embedded%26v%3D_ZAMf3A1IKo&has_verified=1

Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate

Well interestingly enough the WB is releasing an Arkham Origins handheld version... kinda. This game is set in Blackgate prison and seems to feature a variety of characters from all three Batman Arkham games. The plot comes across as a rehashing of the first game to be completely honest. You'll notice from the trailer that it's a side scroller at times, but it could still be interesting. It's being released on the Playstation Via and Nintendo 3DS on the same day as Batman: Arkham Origins, which is October 25th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRo6Wxfw1VQ

Trailer Time: First Look At Live Action Haganai Movie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP8glrFy1vc Ah man... this looks really bad. None of the actors look like they're in high school... at all. Also there's a line that is straight out of the anime that is just butchered. I am no longer interested in seeing this movie and it's not even because they made changes to the entire story line (Kodaka jumping out of window? Riding a bike?). That's actually par for the course, it's just the terrible casting, acting and makeup.

Here's the poster or a poster like image for it as well

Sailor Moon Plushies Are Adorable!

Yup, more Sailor Moon goods! I know some of you out there love it and so do I! Today we have a look at the adorable plushies that are coming, but also a Luna tissue/random storage plushie... to be honest I don't get this one at all. Couldn't they have just made a Pound Puppy style of plushie for Luna? Why do we need her spine to open up? Anyways, you can expect these in December. mascot02

Trailer Time: Judge Live Action Adaptation

Based off the Manga with the same name, Judge is about nine strangers that wake up inside an old courtroom, handcuffed and wearing animal masks. They're all accused of sins and are forced to pass judgement and sacrifice each other until only four remain. If they don't play... well of course they all die! Sounds fucking awesome and this trailer looks very cool even if it doesn't have any subtitles. This is one to keep an eye on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JoOYmYet6Fc

Damn! New Captain Harlock Clip Delivers The Action

There has been a ton of footage for the upcoming release of the all CG movie Space Pirate Captain Harlock, but it's been limited to the story and space ships for the most part. Today we get to see the Captain in action and it's pretty damn sweet. The CG for this movie is great and often times it looks real in my opinion; can't wait to see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gJAzgPcHW9Q

My Top Rack... Iris West from Flash

The Flash #23 came out on Wednesday. I was pretty stoked for this issue because Reverse Flash gets revealed. The other reason I couldn’t wait focuses on the recent art of this comic. It has been amazing to see the pictures play out here. I wasn’t too impressed with this new Flash; plus Iris wasn’t even married to Barry. Bummer. I kept up with the story because I dig Francis Manapul’s art so much. This comic has got to be the best art I have seen recently. It is exactly what a Flash comic should include; with fast paced panels scattered throughout, it gives that speedster appeal. It is awesome. Iris #1

But let me dig into the real reason we are here. Iris West. She hasn’t been Barry’s wife, but you can sense the attraction between both of them. Barry just moved in with Patty. She is great and all, but she is no Iris. First reason why I love Iris. You can see her antagonizing Patty on her and Barry’s relationship. Only a total whore or aggressively awesome woman could do that. You decide what Iris is. Last issue, Iris got into a Flash-like suit in order to stay out of Reverse Flash’s head. It was total badass and I was hoping for some real action with her. Here we get minimal action with maximum delivery. I love it and it is the very reason I picked her for this week.

Iris #3

Spoiler Ahead!!!!!!!

Reverse Flash gets revealed and I was actually surprised by the role. Sometimes you don’t always get a surprise when dealing with DC or Marvel. He is Daniel West, Iris’ brother. Yeah, it was cool to see how the comic brought him back from #0. I also assume that Daniel will somehow be related to Wally West but who knows. Iris is the first person to find out his true identity. I was shocked to see her take a hit from Reverse in order to save Barry. Aww. The comic ends here, but Reverse Flash is getting his own series. From there we can follow his trail back in The Flash. Most likely Iris will survive, but she will be changed. Who will she fight for? Also, Barry is losing his girl, Patty, so things will soon heat up for Iris and him; at least I can hope.

New Borderlands 2 Video Is Awesome

Who doesn't love the character of Tiny Tina? She has some of the best dialog in the game so I'm going to go ahead and say no one. Here's the latest video reveal for the next DLC which is probably already out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=v1NQT2AmmRI

What If Instead of A Reboot Sailor Moon Kept Going? Sailor Moon Cast 20 Years Later

This is actually one of the coolest fan art projects I've seen. I don't know who created it, but basically the take on it is that the timeline kept going. Meaning the characters have aged twenty years and some of them have kids that have become the new sailor scouts. It's pretty freaking awesome. Also don't be fooled by the source of it, it's actually from here as SEO Fanboy points out. They also have a pretty decent (and lengthy) translation of the page so that you can really get into this fan fiction world. Me, I just like the art and the idea. 023347z89fn2t5tt9mnb2t

Comic Bastards Toolbox: Alpha Flight

All this talk of Justice League of Canada got me thinking about Alpha Flight and what you could possibly do to make the series… well, not so Alpha Flighty. The thing is I like Alpha Flight and so do others, correction others like the idea of Alpha Flight. When a new volume of the series releases everyone is underwhelmed when they’re given a hot pile of pending cancellation. Well that’s not good enough for me anymore so here’s my list of things that can be done to the team to make the books stick around longer than six issues. Also this “Comic Bastards Toolbox” is going to be a bit different from the last one, which is part of the charm of this feature.

No One from Old Alpha Flight Is Allowed On the Team

alpha_flight_variant copy

I know you’re thinking, “but then it’s not Alpha Flight!” The thing is that the core of Alpha Flight remains relatively unchanged each time that Marvel brings the team back and yet it continues to fail. Frankly, you need a new team and I’m not talking about passing on the torch of Vindicator or slapping Sasquatch Jr. on the team, I’m talking about a completely new revamp of the team and this time just make them people with powers rather than stereotypes based on dated Canadian references. I’m surprised the team hasn’t had a French-Canadian with a zig-zag mustache wearing a beanie, earmuffs and a snow-jacket. I don’t really what the dynamic of the team starts off as, just as long as no one from the old team appears… except for Puck. But if Puck does show up he’s got to be fucked up from Hell and really seen some shit. Like you shouldn’t recognize him because he’s so fucked up from his time spent there and he can never crack a joke or a smile. He’s it otherwise they’re all new.

Start Them in Canada, but Then Make Them a Global Team

Canada Start Finish

Here’s the thing about constantly setting the story in Canada, you need to constantly threaten Canada with villains and danger. It’s not something that’s associated with the country and so the writers are constantly creating ridiculous plots that come off unbelievable in the end. Start them in Canada and have the team come together there. Have their roots be there, but then move them on to the world’s stage. Hell I would even say that the team should start off as only a few members and as they travel home from their journey’s they pick up new members. This also saves the reader from the “get the gang together” origin story that has become very tiresome. They can always go back to Canada, but don’t force them to stay there unless you plan on giving a personal look at their day-to-day life in-between the danger… which will get the series cancelled again.

Don’t Try To Make Them the Avengers

New-Avengers-marvel-comics-3975044-1024-768 copy

I would honestly find it very interesting if Alpha Flight was environmental terrorist. They’re doing “good”, but they’re crossing lines. In a way they could be more like X-Force, a mission that matters but they say fuck the rules. If they don’t take that angle (which would ensure that they had to leave Canada and travel the world), then just don’t make them the Avengers. Make them more like a gang of Spider-Man’s that deal with smaller villains and threats, but they don’t need to save the world just stop the bad situation. But please don’t give them a home base, a rich financer and a character to fill every “role” on the team. Team books really suck when you just look at the cover and figure out which character is the power house, the strategist, the inventor and so on and so forth.

Give Them a Personal Life

weddin glarge copy

I’ve factually read some or all of the previous Alpha Flight volumes (including Omega Flight) and there’s a common theme with everything that comes after the fan-favorite 90’s volume… the story isn’t about Alpha Flight. It’s not about the team; it’s about what the team is up against. To an extent the series is about the threat the team will face and a vast majority of the smaller volumes are about who will be on the team; but never really about the people who actually make up the team. The only character that’s had a personal life in the books has been Northstar and Marvel crapped on that when they made him a sales gimmick and shoehorned him into any series they could for three months. That’s great that they had a gay wedding, but now the character is barely a blip on the radar. All of the other team members are just there. We never learn about them or really know them outside of their role on the team. It’s no wonder the series continues to be cancelled, the reader is never given a character to relate to or like outside of an action sequence.

--

Well there you have it. Those are some of the things I would take out of the toolbox to fix Alpha Flight if it were ever given another chance at being a monthly title. Of course these aren’t the only options and I’d love to hear what you think is needed to make a successful Alpha Flight series, so leave a comment below.

Review: Fanboys vs. Zombie #17

I have loved this series so much, but I am confused on what direction the comic is taking. This issue was no fun at all. When I open up Fanboys vs. Zombies I expect to be taken to a new world. A world with zombies and nerd jokes all around. I don’t take this story seriously in any shape. I am always fully entertained and usually get some laughs out of the whole experience. This issue of the series takes a huge step backwards. I really have no idea where they are going with this storyline. Plus the whole title is about fanboys and zombies. I just got zombies; and it was disappointing. The fanboys is what adds the flare and fun to it. Honestly, they could have made the world end with anything, and the comic would still be fun with the fanboys making their jokes. Here we follow Drake Masterson, a celebrity, and not a very bright one. He seems stupid, so right away I feel so disconnected with him. He has turned into a ghost. He struggles with being alone and just wants a bud to hang with. Drake finds someone; a girl. Her name is Caroline and her main goal is to become an actress. Really an actress; boring. Drake falls for this girl instantly. Probably because he doesn’t have many choices left. Of course she can’t see or hear him unless they use an ouija board to communicate.

FVZ_17_preview_Page_1Typical storyline. It shows no interest in being original. Beautiful people have it so rough, especially when one of them is turned into a ghost.  The story is flat. Plus he just met this chick and thinks she is the love of his life. Come on bro. Get some brains and at least see if she is good in bed first right. The two are just annoying, which is sad because I had such high hopes for this work.

Anyway, Drake discovers that he has some power as a ghost and it is a lot easier way for him to communicate with Caroline. I am still confused why a ghost character is needed here. Ghosts are cool and all but I thought we were dealing with zombies…? Caroline shows him some affection in a meaningful way and then that is the end. No big reveal or surprises. The ending isn’t even cheesy or cute. It is just stupid. I get it; I just don’t like it. I miss the old Fanboys; the Wrecking Crew. I miss what they brought to the table with their quick jokes and changing attitudes. They were fun to read. Bring a crew like that back.

There's A Sequel To Super Mario Bros. The Movie... It's A Web Comic

Let me walk you through my experience with Super Mario Bros. The Movie. I remember going to see the movie with several of my friends after we had graduated the fifth grade. Graduation was really just a waste of an hour and an excuse to let us all leave school after only a half day. We were kids so we were excited to see the film. We even liked the changes they had made that we had only viewed on the TV trailer. I remember even having a few slurpee cups that are long gone now. We watched the movie... we did not like the movie. It was a fun experience though because of the day and I have never forgotten it since, but more so I remember eating a half a box of Red Vines throughout the course of the movie and then coming home and puking them up for the rest of the night. That's about everything you can expect from the film. I have never watched it since, but I remember that it sucks terribly. I also remember the "princess is in another castle" ending in which they basically show up and beg for a sequel to be made. I refer to this as the "Super Mario Bros. Ending" and I refer to it a lot in films and comics because it's something that happens. I hate this type of ending which is why I call out the first movie I ever saw use this ending, by name whenever I can. Now that, that is said... there's a sequel. One of the writers on the film made it a web comics. He has a great forward that I will post below along with a few pages to check out, but he informs us that there were ten writers on the movie... somehow that doesn't make me feel better about the film. If you want to read everything there is for the comic so far, then you can do so here. I read it and was not impressed. The art is great, but the story... oh that story. Well let's just say that I'm still not a fan of the story.

New Gameboy Is A Bit Strange

Usually I don't weigh in on Nintendo because they do what they do and always will. I'm fairly certain that's the company motto, either that or "Put a Mario in it". Anyways, the Gameboy is one of the few things that Nintendo makes that I actually like and enjoy. They struck pay dirt with the Gameboy Advance SP which was the first collapsible Gameboy. It was a perfect square and frankly kicked all kinds of ass. Every since then they've stuck to that simple design of making the machine close like a flip-phone, but the difference is that you were happy about it. For some reason their new Gameboy is a part of the 3DS family, but doesn't have 3-D and it looks like a hand-held video poker machine that you would get in your stocking for Christmas when you're parents were just like, "I got your video game system right here." Watch this video... it's informative, but it won't make you want one of these in the least bit. I think it's a Gameboy for old people who didn't like the super-sized screen because they still had to open it. It's the jitterbug of Gameboys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAExBTWIp3M#t=22
