Review: Ether: The Copper Golems #1
By Dustin Cabeal
The first series of Ether was a fantastic read that ended on such a low note. On the one hand, there was this fantastic magical journey that approached the genre differently. A man of science is trying to unlock magic in a logical way. Then the ending hit. Boone, our main character, was homeless, starving and left his family long ago to pursue this adventure. Worse, to get there, he has to hang himself and inflict the real possibility of death, not to mention, what if one time it doesn’t work?

Review: Eternity #1
By Patrick Wolf
I actually read this issue a few days ago but didn’t get around to reviewing it until now. Unfortunately, the moment I put my pen to the paper and tried to write about this comic, I realized I couldn’t remember a single event that happened. The story was so mediocre, bland, and uninspiring that it actually completely erased itself from my memory within just a few short days. I think this pretty much sums up what I think of Eternity #1: Epic cover, epic writer, epic fail.

Review: Ninjak #0
By Dustin Cabeal
If I’m not mistaken, this is the end of the Matt Kindt era of Ninjak. Which is a damn shame. Not that I’m not looking forward to Christos Gage’s take on the character, but I have enjoyed Kindt at the helm of the character. On a side note, I could be wrong, but it seems as if he’s scaling back his work at Valiant, which is a shame. I have enjoyed him as an architect of sorts at the publisher.

Review: X-O Manowar #4
By Patrick Wolf
X-O Manowar is a very difficult comic to review. The problem is there’s almost nothing wrong with it. Every time I read the latest installment, I just want to say: “It’s awesome. Read it. Leave me alone.” This time, though, the story isn’t perfect, so I’ll have a little more to say.

Review: X-O Manowar #3
By Patrick Wolf
Easily one of the best sci-fi series of 2017, X-O Manowar deserves every grain of acclaim it’s received so far: the characters are awesome, the action is intense, and the storyline is captivating. I’d like to find something wrong with this franchise, but as of yet, it still sets the standard. This third installment is just as the good as its predecessors, and I already can’t wait for the next.
Review: Rapture #1
By Levi Remington
The consistently impressive and ever boundless Matt Kindt, who has fast become an arbiter of the Valiant universe, is teaming up again with artist CAFU for Rapture, a 4-issue standalone event series. The book stars Ninjak and Shadowman as they take to the Deadside with Geomancer Tama and Punk Mambo to defend against an ancient evil that threatens to breach the heavens, bringing cataclysm to Earth. Valiant promises a "Tolkien-esque" journey through the Deadside, making for the publisher's first ever high-fantasy epic. Read ahead for my thoughts on the first issue after I translate the gleeps and glorps
Review: X-O Manowar v2 #2
By Dustin Cabeal
I need to go back and find out how Aric lost his damn hand and when the suit started going by its name and talking because Matt Kindt’s dialogue and characterization for these two is great. It’s vastly different from what Robert Venditti was doing with the character, but in a way continues the natural progression of the character. It’s not one of those hard shifts in comics that make you miss the previous creative team, but rather appreciate them more for getting the story to where it is now. It is my great hope that Matt Kindt will be given a solid 50 issues of X-O before he hands it off to someone else that understands the character as well as he and Venditti have.

Review: Ninjak #26
By Dustin Cabeal
Totally willing to admit that I haven’t kept up with Ninjak, but unlike a lot of superhero comics, Matt Kindt makes it easy to jump back on the series. Point in case, this is a pretty big conclusion to a storyline, and once again it involves the Shadow Seven, Roku, and Master Darque. I’ll say this much; the series does need some new villains because I am getting super tired of that dude with the creepy little hands. He’s great because of those hands, but he’s still just creepy as fuck.

Review: Grass Kings #2
By Daniel Vlasaty
Grass Kings is back with its second issue. If you read my review for issue #1, you’ll know that I loved it, and that I have high hopes for this book moving forward. I was excited to see this title come up on the review list and jumped at the opportunity to get back out to the Grass Kingdom. Second issues are tricky things, I think. These are the issues that really set the tone for a book, because first issues are all about hooking the reader. But second issues have to slow it down a bit and give readers something to latch onto. Usually second issues will take a step back and spend some time on character development. And that’s exactly what issue #2 of Grass Kings does.
