Review: Harley Quinn and Batman #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Looking at that cover, I’m sure more than a few people in their 30s and early 40s were like, fuck yeah, Batman The Animated Series as a comic book, but not that shitty one they did for kids back in the 90s. That’s what my thought was, minus the shitty comic part because I actually liked them. Then I opened it and quickly realized that it was The Adventures of Batman & Robin… Not Batman The Animated Series.

Review: Dark Days: The Casting #1

By Dustin Cabeal

These one-shots have swung the narrative so much I want to puke my churro and get off the Sea Dragon. That’s not where I really want to start, but trust me, by the time I’m done there, isn’t going to be a good fit for that line.

Review: Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1

By Shawn Warner

There have been some strange pairings or ‘Odd Couples’ since team-ups entered the collective consciousness, in fact DC Comics has mashed their top tier characters with those of Hanna Barbara’s storied past and now June has seen the publisher do the same with the Looney Tunes gang. Since DC and Looney Tunes are both properties of Warner Brothers it would make sense, at least commercially that, to paraphrase Spyder from Powerman 5000, these two worlds eventually would collide. Not too long ago the Looney Tunes characters graced the covers of the upper echelon of the New 52, at least variant covers, but now it’s time for actual crossover team up action between serious super heroes and largely large headed cartoon characters. Sure, it’s happened in the past; Scooby Doo meets Batman and Robin and the like but, again this is the big time and mostly not for laughs.

Comics To The Maxx - 003 - Bat-Magic

By Dustin Cabeal

Click here or on the title to be taken to the podcast.

003 - This is Comics to the Maxx! It came to me in a dream, the idea for this podcast that is. It's a little like our last episode in which we turn the entire universe upside down, but this time we start with Batman and add a dash of the Lantern Corps. If that sounds interesting trust me, it's the air molecules sitting above the tip of the iceberg! Sit back and get ready for Dustin and Kevin to sell you on their latest Elseworld's title that will likely never be made, but you'll fucking wish it was by the end of the show, it's Comics to the Maxx time!

Review: Batman #25

By Daniel Vlasaty

Batman’s back and he’s fighting in a new “war.” This poor guy, he just can’t catch a break. He just goes from one villain to the next. One war to the next. And when he runs out of villains to go through, the cycle just starts itself over again. This time around it’s the War of Jokes and Riddles. So obviously the two villains he’s going to go face-to-face with are the Riddler and the Joker. I know a lot of people hate the Joker as a character, and I’m wondering if that’s just because he’s getting kind of played out. If that’s the case, I can understand. Because I can see that. Personally, I’ve always liked the Joker. But I can see how he’s getting overused in storyline after storyline after storyline. There is an interesting (kind of) twist to his character here so I am going to hold off judgement on how his part in this “war” is going to play-out. I used to review every issue of Batman for this site. And I’ve always read Batman. Sometimes it’s bad and sometimes it’s good. Although after issue #18 I stopped reviewing it because I was basically just writing the same review over and over again every month. But I didn’t stop reading it. And now we’re back with issue #25 and here’s a review of it.

Review: Dark Knight III: The Master Race #9

By Jonathan Edwards

Holy god, this shitheap of mediocrity is finally over. You really have to wonder what the creative team was doing during those extra months between issues. Because, they sure as hell didn't use that time to create a superior book. Seriously, a year and a half to get out nine issues averages about one every two months (remember, this was supposed to be a monthly title), and they've all been bland at best. It's even worse when you juxtapose it with what DC is doing with a fair amount of their Rebirth titles. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, and The Flash, to name a few, have been shipping semimonthly since June of last year, and they've all been a far cry better than DK3. Whereas here we've been subjected the awfulness that is contemporary Frank Miller filtered through Brian Azzarello, who only succeeds in stripping away the lion's share of poor taste that would likely be there otherwise. Other than the, y'know, barely masked Islamophobia and support for police brutality in the name of "justice," that is. So, I welcome this end. And funnily enough, this might be the best, or at least close to it, this series has been. But, again, that's not saying a lot.

Review: Trinity - Annual #1

By Jonathan Edwards

I remember having some particular interest in Trinity when I was first looking over DC's new releases that would be launching with Rebirth. I couldn't tell you exactly why, though the promise of a book focusing specifically on the dynamics between Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman intrigued me. I now know there had previously been an ongoing weekly book with the same name and conceit, but at the time, I was easily hooked by a novelty I somehow hadn't really ever considered. I read the first six issues before stopping, mainly because I'd managed to fall behind in my reading after around Trinity #3. I didn't really want to play that much catch-up, so I opted to just finish up the first story arc and leave it at that. I enjoyed the book enough (I even briefly considered reversing my earlier decision and checking my LCS for back issues), but ultimately I decided that treating those first six issues like something of a limited series was enough for me. And then, this annual cropped up. After some slight deliberation, I decided I might as well let it be the final say in whether or not I picked up the main book again.

Unboxing: Loot Crate - April 2017

By Dustin Cabeal

Whoo! Here's the last video of the day. Hopefully, you checked out the last two Star Wars Builders videos ( Starfighters and Millennium Falcon ) and also this month's Loot Anime unboxing. This month's Loot Crate had some junk. I wish I could say that nicer, but the X-Files tie-in was garbage and I've yet to meet anyone that genuinely like Jessica Jones or cared to own anything from the show. Even the Stranger Things tie-in was kind of meh. Really you could have called this box a Netflix and friends box, but whatever. There is one Batman related item that was fan-fucking-tastic.

Review: Batman/The Shadow #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Lately, DC has been teaming up a lot of character with other companies. It’s not a bad play as it was a heavy staple of the 90s and I doubt anyone would argue that it was a business practice that sunk the industry. If anything, it was a decent practice that made comics fun so in a lot of ways, it’s nice to see it back. Now, that’s not to say that they’ve all been hits or even interesting.

Review: Dark Knight III: The Master Race #8

By Jonathan Edwards

I don't like Frank Miller. Not just because he's a shitty person, nor because his writing's gotten definitively worse over the last decade or so. With maybe one or two exceptions, I've never liked his work. Brian Azzarello is a lot more middle of the road. From what I've read, he tends to be decent at the very least (Moonshine, for one, has been pretty good so far, though definitely not the best thing coming out from Image right now). However, I'm pretty sure Azzarello is the only thing keeping this book from taking a straight nosedive into pure awfulness. It's long been presumed that he was taking on the brunt of the writing with this series, and some of Miller's own comments, explaining his writing of a fourth entry in the Dark Knight series, more or less confirms that. It's too bad that he can only do so much here, and it really isn't enough. Despite attempts to veil the rampant Islamophobia Miller threw around in Holy Terror, it still ends up about as subtle as a truck. Well, if you want to call portraying the Kadorians as blatant and over the top religious zealots utilizing suicide bombers "veiled." And if that weren't enough, issue #7 of this shit show advocates for police brutality. Way to go. Yet, can this penultimate issue turn it all around and make this a worthwhile book? Nope, not in the slightest.

Review: Batman #18

By Daniel Vlasaty

After two issues of pretty much straight set-up, we’re back to the action in Batman #18. From the opening page spread of Batman and Bane arguing and fighting in the rain all the way back to their respective childhoods this issue really packs in an emotional/action-packed punch.
