BOOM! Studios Announces New Full-Color Edition of Pizzeria Kamikaze from Etgar Keret and Asaf Hanuka
Press Release
BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the addition of PIZZERIA KAMIKAZE, the haunting, sometimes surreal graphic novel by award-winning writer Etgar Keret (The Seven Good Years) and Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Asaf Hanuka (The Realist), to its Archaia imprint. The new edition will debut in February 2018 and will be presented in full color and in prestigious hardcover for the first time. This unexpectedly powerful story of love, loss, and escape was first published in black and white by Alternative Comics in 2006 and is based on Keret’s own short story, Kneller’s Happy Campers, which also served as the basis for the independent film, Goran Dukić’s Wristcutters: A Love Story.

Review: Mech Cadet Yu #2
By Daniel Vlasaty
I really enjoyed the first issue of Mech Cadet Yu when it came out last month. I thought it was a solid opening issue. And I was excited to jump back into this “boy and his giant robot” story. I wanted to see how Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa continued to grow this story that is not entirely unique or original but is still being presented interestingly and engagingly.

Review: Jane
By Dustin Cabeal
On paper, I’m the wrong demographic for Jane. It’s a modern day adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which I have never read. I could go either way on modern day adaptations as well; sometimes it’s interesting to see how they pan out other times they’re this weird hybrid of old and new that doesn’t quite make it. If we explore further, I’m not a fan of screen writers or TV writers writing comics. Archaia’s owner BOOM! has produced more than a few stories by Hollywood writers that I have outright loathed.

Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora Returns in All-New Special, The Crisis in Xmasville
Press Release
BOOM! Studios is excited to announce KLAUS AND THE CRISIS IN XMASVILLE by Eisner Award-winning writer Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, The Multiversity) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Dan Mora (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers, WWE: Then. Now. Forever.), the third story in the critically acclaimed reimagining of the Santa Claus origin story. KLAUS AND THE CRISIS IN XMASVILLE continues the holiday tradition of a new Klaus release from BOOM! Studios in December, dating back to the franchise launch in 2015.

Review: Lazaretto #1
By Daniel Vlasaty
This is the second new #1 issue I am reviewing this week. And this is also the second new series I am jumping into without knowing anything at all about it. I had never even heard of Lazaretto until I saw it pop up on our review list for the week. And I chose to review it based on the cover art alone. Something I have done many times before. And not just with comics, but with movies and books and music. They say never judge a book by its cover. And that’s true in this case too. But the exact opposite of what the saying actually means. Because in the case of Lazaretto, the cover is the best, and possibly only, good thing about this book.

Review: Go Go Power Rangers #2
By Jonathan Edwards
Despite having reviewed a smattering of Power Rangers-related comics, and continuing to do so with this one, I still wouldn't really call myself a fan of the franchise. As a kid I did watch several of the series, and I really liked the toys, but I don't think I ever specifically cared about the characters or the circumstances they found themselves in. I liked the Red Ranger because he was red, and red was my favorite color, not because of who was under the mask. And honestly, I think that probably just carried over into my adult life. I like the core concept, but I have no attachment to any given Rangers, villains, story arcs, or what have you. If there was an exception it'd be Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and maybe, just maybe, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie too. But even then, those spots were nowhere near soft enough to make me care for a second about the reboot Power Rangers film that came out earlier this year. I've heard good things from a friend or two of mine, but I see nothing other than one big boring CG-fest. Also, the new suits suck, but I digress. If at this point you're wondering why then I'm reviewing this book, I have an answer for you: Dan Mora. If you happened to have read my review for Klaus and the Witch of Winter and/or the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 2017 Annual, you know what that means. If you didn't, put simply, I love his artwork. Like, a lot. So when this series was announced with Mora on art duties, I immediately planned to pick it up. And after reading and quite enjoying the first issue, here I am to review the second.

Studios announced today. With critical acclaim from all corners, including Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List,” MISFIT CITY is the newest smash hit from the innovative BOOM! Box imprint of BOOM! Studios.

Review: Clueless: Senior Year
By Dustin Cabeal
I’ll save you from the boring “I love Clueless” to speech and just jump right into the question I asked myself the entire time I read the new graphic novel from BOOM! Box/BOOM! Studios…
“Who is this for?”
After reading the entire thing, I can confidently say… I'm clueless, and I wish that were an intended pun, but it’s just the truth.

Review: Sisters of Sorrow #2
By Dustin Cabeal
After my last tongue lashing for this series, I bet you’re wondering why I’m back again? Well, I do like to give things more than one chance because you never know when something could surprise you. That didn’t happen here in case you were wondering. No, unfortunately, it’s just more of the same. Passed on TV scripts being poorly transposed into comic books.

Review: Hi-Fi Fight Club #1
By Dustin Cabeal
If you read comics and proclaim to love comics, then you should read Hi-Fi Fight Club this week. If I did a pick of the week or some such crap, then this would be it. If I had a spinner rack at a comic shop with recommendations that people “in the know” scoffed at because they already knew the book was cool, this would be in that spot. I would never know it was in that spot, but it would be there.

Review: Godshaper #5
By Dustin Cabeal
After the last issue, I was left with the impression that this story could go on forever. After this issue, it’s pretty clear that the storyline is ending in the next issue. There’s a lot of surprises and twists in this issue that in hindsight you could sorta see coming if you dissected everything from beginning to end.

They Finally Put All The Monkey Franchises Together... Yay?
By Dustin Cabeal
It's rare I comment on a press release anymore mostly because no one ever agrees with me and I don't particularly care that much anymore. I let my reviews do the talking, but this gets an exception. Not only do I actively dislike both franchises, but I've never had a morsel of a desire to see them paired together. I'm sure the complicated class commentary of Apes will work with the giant fighting monster commentary that Kong has become. Fucking yay. Side note, I haven't been excited about any of BOOM!'s recent announcements. I'm going to just search for those diamonds in the rough that they produce like Godshaper and the franchise licensed crap.

Review: The Unsound #3
By Daniel Vlasaty
I didn’t really like the first issue of The Unsound. It just came off as boring and unoriginal and it didn’t hit the spots in my brain I think it was supposed to hit. I don’t know. I told myself I was going to be done with the book, that I had too much other stuff to read. I’ve told myself this a lot over the years. That if I’m not one hundred percent into a book that I should cut it out of my life. That there are plenty other books out there that I actually do like that I should spend my time reading.
