Review: Skin & Earth #3

By Ashley Gibbs

Living on the wrong side of town in a post-apocalyptic world and having recently suffered a broken heart, En’s life isn’t going so well at the moment. Skin & Earth #3 introduces a new, mysterious character into her life and that’s about it. The series is the brainchild of Canadian singer Lights and links up with her upcoming album of the same name with songs directly related to the comic itself. However, the songs and music videos currently available have been more interesting than the comic tie-in. Halfway through a run promising crazy romance, cults, and self-discovery for En, yet so far only the first has happened. While a good read, those seeking a faster pace may be disappointed.

Review: Fruit Ninja #1

By Dustin Cabeal

I have to assume this is based on a show or something. It’s clearly not based just off the game in which you use your finger to swipe across the screen and cut fruit in half while attempting to get a high score and not hit any bombs and shit. I wanted to read it because it looked like dumb fun, it ended up only being one of those things and it’s the former, not the latter.

Review: James Bond: Moneypenny #1

By Dustin Cabeal

When I saw that Dynamite was only giving Moneypenny one issue, I was instantly disappointed. I’m a fan of the new Moneypenny and so reading her back story intrigued me a lot, but a one-shot pretty much assured that it would be a big hit or a miss. It’s, unfortunately, a miss for me.

Review: Bettie Page #2

By Dustin Cabeal

After a lackluster first issue, I decided to give this series another shot. Unfortunately, it’ll be the last shot I give it. It’s not a bad comic. I’m not quitting it because the story is awful or because the artwork is unenjoyable. It’s just a boring comic book.

Review: Sheena - Queen of the Jungle #0

By Ashley Gibbs

Blonde, bold and beautiful; the iconic Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, is back with her own series giving her a revamp for the modern world. While I am not personally well-versed on the character or her past, I know of her and know who she is the minute she takes the scene. Sheena has been around in one form or another since 1937, being the first female comic book character to have her own ongoing series. She’s also had television series and a movie so chances are you’ve seen her before without even knowing it. I decided to give Sheena #0 a shot to learn more about the character and where these writers planned to take her. This issue is short and serves more as a teaser than anything else and is a decent starting point for a reader who may also be as curious as I was.

Review: Skin & Earth #2

By Ashley Gibbs

After the first issue of this series caught my attention, as the music linked to it, I found myself looking forward to what Skin & Earth #2 would have to offer, despite my suspicions as to where the story would lead. Set it in world destroyed by polish where the rich get richer and the poor just work and die off, this series is done by the musician Lights. She writes it and does all of the artwork which is very commendable, it’s entirely her vision. Her new album is also linked to this comic and so far, two music videos have come out that reflect the story being told here which is great experience to see things coming to life in different mediums. This issue focuses on En’s relationship with her lover and its unfortunate end.

Review: Mighty Mouse #3

By Jonathan Edwards

I wasn't originally going to write this review. Neither of the previous issues did enough to make me want to keep reading, nor did they provide much to talk about while reviewing them. I really didn't have a reason to do anything but skip this one. However, I didn't. I couldn't tell you why, but instead I decided I'd read the issue first at let that be the judge. Turns out, Mighty #3 is pretty bad. I don't know if this is the point when the creative team stopped caring or just the proof that they never cared, but it's honestly kind of amazing to me how much of this issue feels like a blatant cop-out. The characters are entirely one-dimensional, and I don't think a single thing that happened felt like anything more than outright plot convenience.

Review: Grumpy Cat/Garfield #1

By Dustin Cabeal

How the fuck did Grumpy Cat get top billing on this book? Like, what the hell.

I have no idea who the hell this book is for. It seems to be written for children, which is just strange. Grumpy Cat, a former internet meme, gained popularity from internet users who would likely hate this book upon site. Garfield, despite the cartoon shows, Christmas special and terrible live action movies, is a comic strip that’s written for anyone and everyone. Anyone can jump on to Garfield and read it, not just children. Why then is Grumpy Cat/Garfield written for children?

Dynamite Announces The Charmed Manga OGN That No One Was Looking For

By Dustin Cabeal

Come on... no one is looking for Charmed comics outside of a small handful of comic readers that just have no self-control. More so, I don't think even those readers are looking for a manga version. I could be wrong. There could be market research behind this, but since no comic company does market resource, I doubt it. I'll read it though, but I'm going to hold it to manga standards.

Review: Bettie Page #1

By Dustin Cabeal

If you’ve followed the site and my podcasts for a while now, then you can count on three things when I talk/review a Dynamite comic. The first is that I never go easy on them (nor anyone for that matter). The second is that I’ll always give them a chance. The last isn’t really a rule of thumb or anything, but I’m rarely impressed with their licensed work… which is most of their publishing slate.

Review: Skin & Earth #1

By Ashley Gibbs

When people usually think of comic books they think of the many spandex-clad heroes that constantly save the world and mainstream movies only enforce this. While I do love a good superhero romp, sometimes it’s nice to a read a comic that tells a different story. Skin & Earth #1 is the brainchild of Canadian musician Lights that ties into her upcoming album of the same name. The story being told links up with the album using both a visual and audio medium to engage fans. The first single "Giants" is currently available, as is the music video and you can instantly see the connection. It’s an interesting approach to comics and always positive to see women share their talents in what is a very male-dominated area.

Review: Mighty Mouse #2

By Jonathan Edwards

I was not impressed by the first issue of Mighty Mouse. It was an entirely by-the-book endeavor that failed to justify a version of 2017 where a grade-schooler loves Mighty Mouse almost as much as it failed to justify a new Mighty Mouse comic in our version of 2017. I still gave it a decent rating. Because, I could still see someone reading and enjoying it for some quick and cheap fun.  All that being said, I did find one way this book could redeem itself, and that is the explanation of how the hell Mighty Mouse was transported between worlds. Unfortunately, we don't get that in this issue either, but we do get a couple other interesting ideas, or at least executions, instead.
