Review: Green Lanterns #52

By Cat Wyatt

It may have only been two weeks since the last issue of Green Lanterns released, but with what has been going on lately it feels like longer. Last we saw of our Green Lantern corps was not good. The Elops were being eradicated, a Guardian had been murdered, Hal was missing, and John had been seriously wounded. On the bright side, things couldn’t possibly get any worse, right?

It seems like the Green Lanterns can’t ever catch a break, can they? Set shortly after they had dealt with the Darkstars, the Green Lanterns are now facing a new and less understood threat. Worse, thanks to the conclusion of the last episode it seems like they might not even be able to safely trust their own. This issue, Green Lanterns #51, Evil’s Might, continues on with that threat of concern.

This issue of the Green Lanterns is the 50th, and therefore it’s certainly got something special in mind. For one thing, it’s longer than the standard issue, with a few extra pages thrown in for our benefit. The issue itself is titled ‘Evil’s Might Part One’ which certainly doesn’t sound good. It doesn’t look like they’re doing a tie-in with what has been happening in Hal Jordan, which means we’re about to see another major event happening in the outer universe for DC.

Green Lanterns #49 concludes the On the Run plot that has been going for the last couple of issues. Here we’ll finally get to learn why Jessica Cruz was on the run and how exactly everything ended up happening in the first place. There are still plenty of questions to be answered, but you know how it is.

With the way things have been going for Jess lately, it’s no surprise that fans have been anxiously waiting for Green Lanterns #48. This issue is titled Rebel Run and it’s a disturbingly accurate title for this issue. As you can clearly see on the cover, Hal has arrived and is looking to arrest none other than Jessica Cruz. We can only guess as to why…perhaps it has something to do with his wanting to take her ring in the last issue?

Review: Green Lanterns Annual

By Cat Wyatt

Green Lanterns Annual is an interesting issue, to say the least. The Lost Lantern is the first time in a long time that we’ve seen Simon, Jess, Hal, and Jon Stewart all working together for any length of time. This should be pretty exciting for those fans that have been hoping to see more interactions between our Green Lantern groups.

We’re nearing the conclusion to the Ghosts of the Past plot, and man have things gotten pretty intense. Jess is trapped inside her own memories, courtesy of Singularity Jain; Simon is trying to get inside to rescue her, and the rest of the Justice League are waiting outside and probably wishing they could do more to help.

Things have been pretty rough for our Green Lantern duo the past few hours. Jessica is reliving one of the worst memories of her life (and she’s doing so by choice, believe it or not), and Simon is trying to deal with the resulting black hole it created and his rescue mission (no way is he leaving his partner to go through this on her own).

In the last issue of Green Lanterns we saw the return of Singularity Jain, and while we all knew this wasn’t going to end well we were powerless to stop what was bound to happen. The issue ended with Jessica getting turned into a black hole (at least I’m assuming that is the case – she could have just been sucked into it, theoretically) that is hovering over the city (creepy). It probably goes without saying that the situation is not good.

With all of the major plot arcs from recent issues wrapped up, Green Lanterns #44 is free to take a bit of a break; not that they’re going to, of course. This issue brings the return of Singularity Jain – finally! I’ve been wondering what the heck she’s been up to since we last saw her, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s been curious and concerned (let’s be honest here; there’s no way it’s a good idea to have that woman running off unsupervised throughout the galaxy).

The last several issues of Green Lanterns has been focused on the superhero trafficking that’s been occurring. Issue #43 brings us the conclusion to this boy, and it is not a letdown. To recap, in the last issue Jess was surrounded by mind-controlled superheroes (she’s attempting to save them by using constructs to destroy the chips in their brains – risky), Simon is fighting the big bad, and Scrapps went ahead and found Night Pilot…sort of.

Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #40

It’s only been two weeks since the last issue of Hal Jordan, and the Green Lantern Corps came out, but it feels like it has been months. I’ve been so anxious to see what was going to happen next, and leaving Hal all alone in Zod’s control has not been comforting to me. There are a lot of things in motion right now, from Zod officially making a move to the Guardians interfering with the way John Stewart runs the Green Lantern Corps. I’ve been looking forward to seeing where it was going to go next.

Issue #42 of Green Lanterns continues the saga that the last few issues have carried us on. Simon and Jess have figured out that thanks to an online dating app superheroes (usually of a lower level) have been getting abducted. In the last issue, they were able to get an idea of where the heroes were being held captive. Meanwhile, the cause for all of this distress (Night Pilot), has been moved to a secondary location for reasons unknown.

The Green Lanterns are still dealing with the repercussions from that Caper dating app. Who would have thought one little app could cause so much trouble? To recap, thanks to this app Simon had his heart (and his ego) broken, Jessica had no idea it existed (until the other day), and at least one villain was using the app to capture and kidnap heroes (preferably the ones that wouldn’t be missed right away). So in other words, it’s a huge mess.

This was an interesting issue, to say the least. We start off with both Hal and Kyle awfully beat and bloody, trapped in a jail cell on Planet Jekuul, now home to Zod (and his family, of course). Kyle appears to be worse off than Hal, though that could also have something to do with Hal’s physiology for all we know.

Our Green Lanterns have been busy – busier than usual actually. Clearly something is going on, the question is, what? A tropical storm is the most recent event requiring multiple heroes to step up and help to save the day (man, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have heroes during natural disasters?). Several notable heroes are in the backgrounds of these scenes, such as Powergirl and Supergirl, as well as some less known heroes like Bulleteer (yes, you read that right).

Fans will likely remember the dramatic turn that occurred in issue 38; where Liseth Vok killed Kesh Cur, attacked the Green Lanterns (and her mother) and turned an alien DNA machine on herself. Yikes, when you put it like that it seems like the shit hit the fan in the last issue, which isn’t inaccurate. This issue starts with the battle being over already, but as many generals would say, the war hasn’t been won (or lost) yet.

If you thought the twist revealed in the last issue was something, then get ready to hop onboard for another ride. In issue 37 it was revealed the Liseth was part of the Red Tide (apparently we were supposed to understand that this was past tense for her, but I interpreted as a current status at the time). One can understand why Simon would find that so upsetting, to say the least. Here we get to see the reactions of everyone else, including Liseth’s mother.

It’s not every day that a Green Lanterns cover has a conversation on it, but that’s exactly what happened for issue #37. Right smack dab on the front we see Jess and Simon surrounded by small oods (thank you Doctor Who, for giving me a creature to reference here). Now in all likelihood they’re the Molites or another race we’ve seen recently, but they’re so stylized here I couldn’t say that for certain without opening up the issue and reading it (well done DC). The most striking part about the scene is Simon’s ring informing us (or more accurately, him) that “probability of death [is] 100%.” Yikes.

Issue 36 picks up exactly where 35 left off, almost to the second. For those concerned, let me assure you now that the unique names keep on coming; we have the continued presence of Boff and Bolphunga, as well as Singularity Jain. I still can’t get over any of their names (and don’t even get me started on their titles).
