Review: Fence #1

By Cat Wyatt

Fence is a new series by Boom! and as the title implies is about a group of Fencers. Nicholas Cox is the main character, he’s new to the local Fencing competitions, but he’s not afraid of that (also, he has amazing hair). In short order, it’s revealed that his first match will be against Seiji Katayama (he’s the guy on the cover, for those that are curious), whom apparently is the best around (so good that people are surprised he’s still around, as opposed to fencing in bigger matches).

Review: Eugenic #2

By Justin McCarty

This installment of Eugenic is a much smaller story than the first issue. This is a story of young idealists and their dissent. The Numans have risen to power and humans are no longer the top of the food chain. In fact, humans are now considered to be no better than any other animal. In this issue, we get to a distinctly dystopian view of society. Can a society designed to be perfect still be evil?

Review: Rugrats #1

By Jonathan Edwards

This book. This fucking book. I completely missed the announcement for it, so I was surprised to see it pop up as one of this week’s releases. I also just didn’t really know how or why anyone could do a Rugrats comic in 2017. Yeah, it was a popular show (I watched it myself back in the day), but I can’t say I’ve heard anyone clamoring for a revival, let alone as a comic book. I don’t know, I could be wrong. Either way, curiosity still got the better of me, so I decided to give it a look. And boy, was it a painful experience. Rugrats #1 does not invite us back to the wholesome children’s cartoon world of yesteryear. Oh no. Instead, it evokes those rose-tinted memories and nostalgia only to stomp all over them with the unceremonious cynicism of shitty and superficial social commentary.

Review: Eugenic #1

By Justin McCarty

Tynion and Donovan are together again on Eugenic. This will conclude his apocalyptic trilogy that started with Memetic. Eugenic imagines a future where prejudice is bred out, and a new kind of human race comes to exist. It’s a high-concept sci-fi horror. Tynion has come up with a very eerie version of the future that almost feels like it could happen. There’s also going to be crazy science and monsters. Eugenic will explore why do people need to feel that they are normal, that their children are normal. Eugenic, like the other stories in the apocalyptic trilogy, will be a three issue mini-series with each issue being about 40 pages long.

Review: Destroyer #5

By Ashley Gibbs

While the previous issue was packed full of backstory that was woven into the current crisis, Destroyer #5 suffers slightly due to its pacing. Everyone is drawing closer to the same location but this moment has to be prolonged artificially. That being said, it’s still a solid read offering more insight to the characters and more history. The themes presented are dark, serious, and often bleak which can be a bit depressing, especially in an issue with less action to break up the doom and gloom. But despite the science fiction aspects, the issues tackled are real and relevant and they’re things that need to be said even if on the pages of a comic book.

Review: Destroyer #4

By Ashley Gibbs

Destroyer #4 does exactly what it needs to do, and it does it well; giving readers a fair amount of backstory while also revving up the anticipation for the next issue and the upcoming finale. This issue provides a lot of lovely backstory for Dr. Baker and the organization that used to employ her while also adding in a fair amount of action as the Monster and Akai face off. Dr. Baker hasn’t been the most classic of leads, it’s very clear the people against her have no good intentions whatsoever. But this series has done a good job of showcasing that things aren’t always black and white so there could always be more twists and turns. For now, we’re given an excellent issue -my favorite, so far.

Review: Hi-Fi Fight Club #2

I’m not as high on Hi-Fi Fight Club as I was with the first issue and yes, I did just open with a pun. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the comic, but it hits that second issue slump that has become more and more common.

Review: Godshaper #6

By Dustin Cabeal

Right up until the end Simon Spurrier has little nuggets of truth and wisdom for you. This story had many layers, but the one it leaves you on with this issue is that the Gods in this story were never just religious Gods, but instead the things that people worship, celebrities, comics, movies, phones, hell relationships. It’s Spurrier holding up the mirror and saying, “This is how we act, but maybe we can do better.”

Review: Go Go Power Rangers #3

By Jonathan Edwards

With Go Go Power Rangers, Ryan Parrott and Dan Mora have given us a damn entertaining read full of grounded, human, and very likable characters. This third installment continues that trend with the best issue so far, as well as finally convincing me that the existing canon will not inhibit the quality and development of this book. Really, one of the best things about the story is its structure. Rather than go the familiar route of focusing on one or two characters for an A plot, a different one or two for a B plot, and then jumping back and forth with more time dedicated to the former, Parrott utilizes vignettes to focus on pretty much all of the characters in equal measure. Everyone has their own story and character arc going on, each of which we only experience glimpses of at a time. However, what really makes it work is that when a given character isn't being focused on, they'll still more than likely show up as a secondary or support character in someone else's vignette. It goes a long way in making the whole world and story feel that much more cohesive and engaging.
