Review: Barbarella #1

By Justin McCarty

I picked up Barbarella because of the cover alone. Wow. Just wanted to get that out of the way. I am familiar with the Barbarella comics, and the movie. But I have never read Barbarella before or watched the movie. I don’t know why I haven’t seen the movie. Just never got around to it, I guess.  That means I don’t have any reference point for what this comic should be. What it is, is a campy sci-fi social commentary on sexual empowerment and ignorant religious dogma.

Review: John Wick #1

By Justin McCarty

The cover to John Wick is really good. That I liked. The comic itself never really comes together. The cover though captures all of the neo-noir that the movie gives you. The comic itself. Not so much. I’m a John Wick fan, and I was looking forward to Dynamite getting this, but I was disappointed with the final result. I really didn’t want to write a bad review, like everybody else I thought the movies were amazing and saw no reason it wouldn’t be an amazing comic, my expectations were too high, I just couldn’t shake the overall feeling of meh.

Review: James Bond: Solstice

By Justin McCarty

James Bond: Solstice, Dynamite’s winter one-shot is out and does not disappoint. This story takes Bond out of his normal duties to do a favor for M. I was reminded of Ian Fleming’s short stories, with their low key plots and smaller stakes. From A View to a Kill comes to mind. Frequently in James Bond stories, the writer will try to throw everything that is James Bond at the story, often turning it into a paint-by-numbers affair. At least that’s how I felt about the last James Bond comic I read. This story gave us a distinctly Bond story without the cliche’. Everything is here but done in a creative and subtle way. I haven’t had a chance to read all the one-shots, but if they are all as good as this, I’ll have to correct that soon.

Review: The Shadow v3 #4

By Justin McCarty

Shadow number four is out this week, and up until the last issue we were mostly confined to a hospital room, Mr. Crispy gave his backstory, Mary did make it out to the world to do some sleuthing. At the end of issue three, The Shadow escapes as a SWAT team storms his hospital room. Mary, of course, goes after him and finds him on the rooftops, wearing the slouch hat, cloak, and twin .45s. It was an exciting conclusion, leaving me dying to know what would happen!

Review: The Shadow/Batman #2

By Ben Snyder

Picking up exactly where the last issue left off The Shadow/Batman #2 is another enthralling entry into the second crossover of two of the most iconic and historic characters in all of comics. While certainly not perfect in all regards, Steve Orlando and Giovanni Timpano do more than enough to justify the existence of this comic.

Review: The Shadow v3 #3

By Justin McCarty

The saga of Mr. Crispy continues! Issue three of The Shadow Vol 3 is out, and it takes us a little deeper into the mystery of The Shadow’s investigation into President Wyatt and his aid Worthy Delaney. So far this story started out with strong social commentary notes, but then gets a little more subtle, the story gets even more subtle with this issue. At first glance, you might think there wasn’t much in this issue. You’d be wrong and haven’t been paying attention.

Review: James Bond Black Box

By Justin McCarty

Dynamite continues its revival of the James Bond mythos in comic form in this six-issue arc called Black Box. This series has had a lot of praise for its ability to tell some pretty terrific stories so far. Unfortunately, I think this was one of the weaker runs in the series. All the components are there. The Aston Martin, obligatory girl, exotic locations, an ugly megalomaniac, the gadget that saves the day, and of course there's Q -- except he is called Boothroyd in this story, as in Major Boothroyd from the first movie and the sixth novel. None of it really comes together, however.

Review: Mighty Mouse #5

By Jonathan Edwards

Well what do you know, this is the last issue of this crappy little series. I was honestly expecting it to go to at least to a sixth installment, but thank God that’s not happening. Mighty Mouse has been a consistently subpar book, and it’s only gotten worse over the last few issues, including this one. No joke, it takes all of one panel for it to dive headfirst into shoddy plot convenience masquerading as metahumor. “You can only shoot a cartoon cannon twice if it’s funny!” Joey declares. Now, the sentiment there is clear, but if you actually stop to think about it for, I don’t know, a second, it becomes clear how much of an oversimplification of old school cartoon slapstick humor that is. Furthermore, the story’s internal logic isn’t even consistent enough to take that at face value if you wanted to. Later on, Joey creates a black hole by drawing it (more on that later, trust me) and says it will “suck up everything from the cartoon universe that doesn’t belong in our world.” Someone offpanel notes that’s not how black holes work and Joey simply replies, “mine does.” So, Joey, if you can ascribe characteristics to the shit you draw, then why can’t YOUR cartoon cannon shoot more than once without any prerequisites?

Review: Skin & Earth #4

By Ashley Gibbs

Skin & Earth #4 follows En and Tsu on a mission of revenge against Priest, En’s ex and it’s about as interesting as you expect. While some important things are discussed, they’re bogged down by sluggish pacing and dull dialogue. While it is commendable that the narrative kept me guessing where the story would go next, it also left me confused and disinterested in how this journey ends. This series is linked to the latest album by Lights, sharing the same title, with the themes of the songs aligning with the comic, however, the album is a lot better than the comic itself.

Review: Hack/Slash – Vampirella #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Crossover comics are not my thing. Rarely, if ever do, they prevent something relevant for either franchise and typically just ends up being two heroes fighting each other. Trying to figure out who the bad guy is, ultimately teaming up and easily defeating the villain, while everyone gets their shit in. It’s the equivalent of an after Pay-per-view Wrestling event in which new storylines are being developed, and jackasses are just running into the ring. Oh, they’re gonna fight each other next… why am I watching this then?

Review: The Shadow/Batman #1

By Justin McCarty

Here is the newest Shadow Batman team up. It promises to give us the best of Batman and The Shadow as they have to deal with a decades-old conspiracy. There has been a steady run of Batman Shadow books lately, and that's for a good reason, they feed into each other. The Shadow inspired Batman, and it’s clear as Batman became popular, the mythos fed back into The Shadow stories. As long as we keep making great Batman Shadow comics, the loop will continue.

Review: Mighty Mouse #4

By Jonathan Edwards

Okay, maybe I need to stop letting morbid curiosity get the better of me after already deciding I don't like a book. Because, I may have hated last issue for its boring, surface level nonsense, but this one pissed me off almost immediately.  The crux of the story is meant to be the juxtaposition between the cartoon world and the "real" world, but here the latter relies at least as much on clichés and plot convenience as the former does, so the only real distinction between the two is the difference in art style. And really, given the current political climate, how tone deaf do you have to be to have a character describe an cartoon alien cat invasion as "the worst terrorist incident in years"?
