When A Trip to Weight Loss Camp Takes A Dark, Dark Turn
Press Release
On April 25th, 2018, Portland Oregon natives and PNCA graduates, Terry Blas, Molly Muldoon, and Matthew Seely, will release Dead Weight: Murder at Camp Bloom with Oni Press!
Deep in the Oregon wilderness sits Camp Bloom, a weight-loss camp where “overweight” teens can “get in shape.” Jesse would rather be anywhere else, but her parents are forcing her to go. Noah isn't sure if he wants to be there, but it's too late to turn back. Tony is heartbroken at the thought of giving up his phone and internet. And Kate... well, she likes the hikes, at least. As far as these four teens are concerned, it's just another boring summer. Until one night, when Jesse and Noah witness a beloved counselor's murder. The body's gone by the next morning, but a blurry photo leads to one clue—the murderer is one of the camp's staff members!

Review: Realms of the Void
By Cat Wyatt
Realms of the Void is a new graphic novel that’s currently still in the works. It’s a creative science fiction story, written and drawn by Santiago R. Villa, an impressive feat to say the least. The whole story takes place in space – frequently out in ships or out in the vacuum itself, rather than on any planets. This was an interesting choice, and one that I found appealing.
Review: P M Buchan's Hangover
By Kelly Gaines
Comics like P M Buchan’s Hangover are everything that’s fun about picking up a title with no expectations, and I’m dead serious when I say I went in with NO expectations. I picked the book for a ridiculous and very me reason: I was hungover. I looked at the title and thought ‘Now here’s a book that understands me.’ Was P M Buchan’s Hangover about being hungover? No. Am I happy I read it? Absolutely. If this is what this man's hangovers are like, we need to drink together. Hangover is not one storyline, but an anthology of strange, disturbing, and darkly hilarious short comics. It’s the funny pages for anyone interested in cannibalism, Satan, and things that go bump in the night. I wouldn’t judge anyone who reads it based on that take away alone- shine on you crazy fucking diamonds. This review would go on for pages if I went story by story and talked about my likes and dislikes, so I’m going to try something new in my review structure.
Review: The Big Sheep: A Farm Noir
By Cat Wyatt
The Big Sheep is a farm noir, and by that I mean it’s a noir story involving anthropomorphized farm animals and a mystery (because it wouldn’t be a noir without a little mystery, now would it?). Our main character, Slow Spade, is unsurprisingly a turtle; he’s also a private investigator though the times have been a little been a little rough on him lately.

Review: Fire Punch vol. 1
By Dustin Cabeal
I judged Fire Punch by its cover… and the name. Even as a reviewer, as someone that’s constantly surprised by the things he reads, I still judge books by their cover. The thing I have going for me is that I don’t stop there, and still give it a shot. Sometimes I’m right; sometimes I’m wrong. I always want to be wrong, and I’m glad to say that in the case of Fire Punch, I was very wrong.
Review: Food Wars! vol. 20
By Dustin Cabeal
While the return of Erina’s father has provided some great moments, the overall story seems to be lacking a real overall cohesiveness. There have been plenty of loopholes for Soma and his gang to skid by, be it Erina’s father letting her stay at Polar Star or Soma’s challenges. It hasn’t been all bad, but there have been some languid moments.
Review: RWBY vol. 1
By Dustin Cabeal
RWBY is a straightforward concept. The title of the books is not only a combination of the main character’s names but also the colors that they wear. Did I mention it’s straightforward? Starting off as something from Rooster Teeth, RWBY has been one of, if not the only crossover hit to come from American and navigate its way into Japanese manga. The manga is made by Shirow Miwa and is adapted to the manga style both in its characters and the world.

I picked up Transdimensional having no prior knowledge of the subject. Not even the Kickstarter description. If I had, I probably would have skipped it. I am probably one of five comics fans that don't get into sci-fi horror. The Kickstarter describes the comic as being a sci-fi horror in the same family as Alien and The Abyss. I’ve seen Alien maybe (just the one - sad face from you probably), not The Abyss. I wasn’t the proper audience for this comic. However, if I was into this type of story, I could see its appeal.
