Review: Hungry Ghosts #2

By Jonathan Edwards

Hungry Ghosts #2 showcases just how strange it is that this book is both a horror anthology as well as a four-issue limited series. The framing narrative is all but abandoned save for briefly showing the teller at the beginning of each story. It makes you wonder why Bourdain and Rose spent so much of the first issue establishing such specific circumstances. As for the two stories we get this time around, they’re an overall stronger pair. However, taken individually, neither is especially good and, despite its flaws, “The Pirates” from the last issue remains the single best story this book has offered so far.

Preview: Resident Alien: An Alien in New York

By Dustin Cabeal

Welcome to an exclusive preview of Resident Alien: An Alien in New York! If I'm not mistaken, this is the fifth volume of the Resident Alien series. I have followed and reviewed damn near every issue of this series, and it is one of my favorites from Dark Horse. Now, I'm not going to drone on and one about what the series is about because it's worth reading on your own, but the title, tends to do most of the work. I will say that if you've never read the series, you can pretty much jump on with any volume. There is an over-arching story that's being told, but every mystery is self-contained to that volume.

Review: Giants #3

By Dustin Cabeal

Giants is refreshing. Each week there are frankly an insane amount of comics released. While I’m sure the numbers are available, I will just guess and say that it’s possible the industry is producing a shit load of comics. Again, I don’t have any exact numbers, but a shit load might be in the top three of all time comics produced. Each week, I personally read a butt load of comics. I don’t review them all, and it’s not nearly as many as I used to read which if I had to put a number on it would probably be twenty-six or more. Ha, fuck you for thinking I was going to milk that “load” joke for one more go!

Review: Niourl

By Ben Snyder

Niourk would be hard to describe to anyone. It starts off extremely simple, telling the tale of seemingly Stone Age tribe outcast and his struggles to get back home; but then it becomes so much more and expansive. In theory, this seems great, but too often Niourk seemed to meander and waste time, leading up to an ending that can seem out of nowhere and uninspired. There are also some characters that are underdeveloped and themes that once again seem ungrounded. But Niourk isn’t entirely bad, as the first chapters of the book offer an interesting take on a familiar story and the art can be gruesome and exceptionally cool.
