Review: Persephone
By Kelly Gaines
It’s rare to find a refreshing retelling of Greek Mythology, but Boom Studios new title has managed to circumvent the cliche pitfalls and create something unique. Persephone blends elements of the queen of the underworld’s tale into a new setting- one with its own rich history and endearing cast. The story still frames an ancient power struggle between the beings that walk the earth and the menacing creatures confined to the Underworld, but Persephone, Hades, and Demeter have a new face- and a beautifully crafted new story about magic, family, and choice.

Review: Nuclear Winter
By Sam King
Nuclear Winter is an original graphic novel that was written by Cab, who also did the art. It is an interesting slice of life story with a twist on it, that takes place in Canada. Serious themes like the ones present in X-Men, with a mix of Chernobyl, meets a plucky heroine carrying out a routine job in really bad weather. It is fun and entertaining, without being dark, dreary, and bleak despite the radiation.

Review: Robocop: Citizen's Arrest #2
By Dustin Cabeal
This is more along the lines of what I expected in the first issue. That is to say that it’s more along the lines of every other RoboCop comic from BOOM! that I’ve read. Much of this comic is inconsequential to the plot and offers no character development.

Review: Fraggle Rock #1
By Sam King
I cannot believe it; somebody brought back Fraggle Rock. I wasn’t an 80’s kid who grew up watching it, but I was a 90’s kid who watched a lot of TV and VHS tapes. Fraggle Rock was always previewed on the Muppet movie VHS tapes I used to watch growing up, and I’m still addicted to the theme. I’d seen the show and even some of the animated series, but I can’t believe a company actually made a comic of it here in 2018.

Review: Coda #1
By Cat Wyatt
Coda is a new series by BOOM! Studios. It’s about a man named Hum who’s on an epic quest to save his wife. It’s described as being perfect for fans of Mad Max and Lord of the Rings, which may very well be true (I don’t know about the Mad Max bit, being as I still haven’t gotten around to seeing it, but I can at least vouch for the Lord of the Rings part). It’s a post-apocalyptic world involving magic, wastelands, oh and did I mention that the main character has a pentacorn (picture a unicorn but with five horns instead of the usual one).

Review: Rugrats #7
By Hunter T. Patrick
As a big Rugrats fan when I was a child I was really looking forward to this. I have not read the other issues yet, so I am reviewing this as the first issue I read, which it required no background knowledge I noticed of the other issues so that was good. With that in mind, the question is if I enjoyed the comic and if it did give me the nostalgia I was looking forward to. The answer is disappointingly no. The story did not feel like a whole story, it felt way too short. There were several panels without dialogue, which I am a fan of, but they just contributed to making the issue feel like a waste. The story would have worked much better if it was half the comic and they had another mini story for the other half, but sadly that story was it. There could be an argument that it is supposed to be like that as it is a comic about babies, but the show did take things up a notch. The ending was predictable, but there was one little twist to it that was fun to see and where the writer went with it.

Review: Robocop: Citizen’s Arrest #1
By Dustin Cabeal
It would be easy to spend most of my review listing all the things this series had going against it before I even picked it up. As a fan of the original two movies, it gets tiring seeing failed attempt after failed attempt to prolong this franchise. While I would love to pitch BOOM! a Robocop story, when they’re landing big established names in the industry, I doubt they’d want to entertain a reviewer’s script idea.

Review: Dodge City #2
By Sam King
Dodge City #2 dives deeper into exposition waters. We get a little more dodgeball playing and a lot more focus on team drama. We find out what the girl meant in the last issue when she referred to the Jazz Pandas as cheaters. It elaborates on plot points presented in issue #1, but slows down the pace a bit, by comparison, edging more toward character development. The story set up has been good thus far, and I’m waiting to see when things will come to a head.

Review: Abbott #3
By Ben Snyder
Out of a job and stretched to her wits end, Abbott #3 doesn’t leave it’s titular protagonist in the best of ways. There isn’t much more explained, but a few more interesting mysteries and a seemingly horrifying antagonist make this entry another strong entry into the Abbott series. Some of the minor gripes of the series are still present such as writer Saladin Ahmed’s overuse of speech bubbles, but that shouldn’t detract from a fun and enjoyable read.
