Review: Kali

By Dustin Cabeal

“Kali” is a title I read and sat on for review because it left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. Revenge stories aren’t supposed to have a happy ending, which is true of “Kali’s” ending, but they typically have a main character that you care for. Kali the character is never likable. There’s no sympathy for her plight and frankly the story moves too fast for you to feel anything other than violence. While I liked the comic, I found myself drawn to the visuals more than I was the story.

The story beings with Kali on a chain gang, that is instantly cooler because of her. The rest of the soldiers looked worn out and shitty but not Kali. She has a fucking knife sticking out of her shoulder, black leather chaps on her tight ass jeans and a rib cage skeleton shirt. She’s cool as ice as none of the kids say. For some reason, these captured prisoners of war are being interviewed to join the army that captured them. This is where Kali becomes unlikable as she rattles off a slew of exposition that stops being relevant to the story. The second she sees her former gang members. The ones that betrayed and left her for dead. Cue the beautiful violence.

Review: Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Anytime I can return to the world of Beasts of Burden; it’s a damn good day. It’s probably going to be a sad day too because as a whole the Beasts of Burden series are heartbreaking. The brilliance of the idea is that it’s a simple witches and warlocks story, but because all the characters are animals, it plays upon peoples emotional attachment to their pets. Nearly seeing a dog die in a magic fight is ten times more moving than any death in Harry Potter. Just kidding, I know that will piss some people off, but there is an insane amount of emotion in this series, and that’s saying something considering there are no people in the story.

Review: Blackwood #3

By Dustin Cabeal

What’s frustrating about Blackwood is that it’s clearly following the Dark Horse formula of mini-series over ongoings. Its what made Hellboy and the Mignolaverse successful because each new series is inviting to new readers. With Blackwood wrapping in one issue, it’s clear that this segment of the story will come to a close, but that the bigger story is just starting. I’m frustrated because I want to read a lot more of this series and who knows how long we’ll have to wait for it.

Based on the cover and the title of She Could Fly, I was under the impression that this comic would be another superhero tale involving a new heroine. I have never been so wrong.

Review: Blackwood #2

By Dustin Cabeal

I’ve written about this many times in reviews, but there was one point in my review life that I feared first issues more than second issues. The first issue is the journey into the unknown. You can’t possibly know if you’ll like the book at all until you crack up the pages for the first time. This, of course, leads to finding a lot of comics that aren’t in your wheelhouse. A few years back though it was as if every creator figured out the formula for a successful first issue. It could have been something amazing, but instead what happened was mediocre to poor second issues that felt more like first issues. It was like someone pulled some zero issue bullshit and so one after the other, I read horrible second issues. Suddenly, first issues didn’t even phase me. I expected them to be good to great, but to this day I still live in fear of the second issue because they still rear their ugly heads and send me away from a series faster than you can count the number of first issues released by Marvel in the past year.

Review: Modern Fantasy #1

By Dustin Cabeal

There are glimpses of brilliance in the first issue of Modern Fantasy, but just that. The first issue provides all the information that one needs from the story. We know the characters, we understand the plot, and ultimately, we can relate to the main character’s desire for more from her life. Will the story take a dark turn and make our main character regret her desire for adventure? It’s not likely. We’re probably getting ready for a good old fashion romp.
