Preview: Modern Fantasy #1 from Dark Horse Comics

By Dustin Cabeal

I will likely have a review for this tomorrow as well, but in the meantime just soak up the preview pages. I'm super excited about this series because of Kristen Gudsnuk. If you haven't read Henchgirl, then please stop living life until you have finished it. Call out from work, leave your kid at the park, whatever you gotta do. Maybe let your spouse cheat on you for an extra day before you break up the relationship. Whateves, I'm not dishing out life advice, just read that and check this out. I hope I shit my pants for it as much as I did Henchgirl.

Review: Xerxes: The Fall of The House of Darius and The Rise of Alexander #2

By Ben Snyder

Despite the disappointment I felt last month after reading Xerxes #1, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful for the follow up issue Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and The Rise of Alexander #2. Unfortunately, I am left feeling as thought his series is entirely unnecessary and disappointing. Frank Miller’s script continues to be a slog due to his overused narration and reliance on Greek prayers and feels half finished. Miller’s art however takes it to another level, an extremely poor one. It all collides to create a feeling that this entire endeavor was rushed and unfinished.

Review: Hungry Ghosts #4

By Jonathan Edwards

I didn’t review Hungry Ghosts #3, but I did still read it. And, it was weird. Structurally, it was identical to issue #2 with virtually no framing narrative. As a pair, the stories were the strongest presented so far, even if the ending of “Deep,” the first story, both came out of nowhere and was… strange. By themselves, neither of them was better than “The Pirates” from issue #1, but they were much closer in quality. Granted, none of the stories throughout Hungry Ghosts have been outright great or, more importantly, all that scary. And, even though it’s safe to say Hungry Ghosts #4 is the book’s best issue, those previous problems are still very much present.

Review: Blackwood #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Listen… I’m all in on this crazy shit. I was basically all in when I read “Evan Dorkin,” but after the first several pages, I’m all in. I have no idea if this is a mini or continuing or one of those limbo series that will be picked up for more depending on the popularity, but comics like Blackwood have been missing in comics and more so missing from Dark Horse. I feel like Dark Horse at some point didn’t like their identity in comics and sought something different. Honestly, I don’t know what others think of them anymore, but horror themed comics of this quality are hard to find outside of Dark Horse.

Review: Ether: The Copper Golems #1

By Dustin Cabeal

The first series of Ether was a fantastic read that ended on such a low note. On the one hand, there was this fantastic magical journey that approached the genre differently. A man of science is trying to unlock magic in a logical way. Then the ending hit. Boone, our main character, was homeless, starving and left his family long ago to pursue this adventure. Worse, to get there, he has to hang himself and inflict the real possibility of death, not to mention, what if one time it doesn’t work?

Review: Aliens: Dust to Dust #1

By Sam King

I have read a LOT of Aliens comics and have regular access to the Dark Horse omnibus collections that have come out. The last Alien comic series I read disappointed me in art and story quality (Dead Orbit). Aliens: Dust to Dust #1 actually does things a little differently and feels fresh. Let me rephrase that: this comic is as fresh as a franchise can possibly be when the main plot line is always humans discover bad things in space and killer aliens run rampant.

Review: World of Tanks: Citadel #1

I just want to start by saying I have only played World of Tanks once and I had a good time with it. My significant other and one of my close friends play it all the time, so I have a solid understanding of it. My S.O. is also a major tank aficionado, so I’m not going in blind to this at all. World of Tanks is a massively multiplayer online game that pits player against player with tanks. Each player controls a tank as part of a team and tries to destroy the other team’s tanks on the map or capture the opposing team’s base. It has become a mobile, board, and card game. I may not be the target audience, but I think this is one that anyone could potentially enjoy with an open mind.

Review: Xerxes: The Fall of The House of Darius and The Rise of Alexander #1

By Ben Snyder

After years upon years of fruitless waiting, Frank Miller finally released his companion to 300. Unfortunately Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander #1 doesn’t reach anywhere near the same lofty heights as its predecessor. Miller delivers a surprisingly predictable and seemingly unnecessary companion to his original masterpiece. But it also continues a trend of Miller returning to his earlier works with noticeable less success, as he did with the Dark Knight III. Similarly to the Dark Knight III, Xerxes just doesn’t seem to add much to the landmark graphic novel.
