Review: Motor Crush #6

I read the first story arc of Motor Crush and liked it well enough. It wasn't anything ground breaking, but it was fun, stylish, and had a decent enough dose of intrigue. Plus, it left off on a pretty big cliff hanger. So let me say up front, this issue does not resolve that. In fact, it does the opposite. Motor Crush #6 is a prequel issue focusing on Sully while Domino's still a child. It also happens to touch on how Sully lost his leg and the rise of Crush in Nova Honda. All in all, it feels more like a standalone story than the beginning of a new arc. And though it does do a pretty good job of showcasing Sully's character, it does feel somewhat at the cost of Domino losing some of her own agency.

Review: Lazaretto #1

This is the second new #1 issue I am reviewing this week. And this is also the second new series I am jumping into without knowing anything at all about it. I had never even heard of Lazaretto until I saw it pop up on our review list for the week. And I chose to review it based on the cover art alone. Something I have done many times before. And not just with comics, but with movies and books and music. They say never judge a book by its cover. And that’s true in this case too. But the exact opposite of what the saying actually means. Because in the case of Lazaretto, the cover is the best, and possibly only, good thing about this book.

Review: Winnebago Graveyard #3

I haven’t liked this book from the beginning, but I keep coming back. I don’t know why. Maybe I hate myself. Or maybe I’m just hoping against hope that Winnebago Graveyard will get better because it’s not all terrible. I like the idea of this book. I like what I think it’s trying to do. But sadly issue #3 doesn’t do anything better than the previous two issues. If anything this might be the worst one yet. Which sucks, because – believe it or not – I don’t actually like giving bad reviews. But anyway, here’s my review of issue #3 of Winnebago Graveyard.

Review: Winnebago Graveyard #2

Winnebago Graveyard is the story about a family on the run from a satanic cult. This comic hits all the check marks for a trashy horror story like something I remember staying up late to watch on HBO and Showtime when I was a kid. There’s a creepy, deserted town. A cop who’s most likely complicit in what’s going on in his town. There’s a family lost and abandoned, after their RV was stolen along with all their possessions. Plus, the “father” in this family is really a step-father and he’s trying to connect with his new wife’s son, but it doesn’t seem to be going so good. This is a trashy horror nerds wet dream. Except it really isn’t because I think it misses most of those marks.

Review: Motor Crush vol. 1

One of the years most acclaimed series, Motor Crush has accelerated itself to a top spot with some of the hottest titles of 2017. Now, while I find nothing grotesquely wrong with this verdict, I find myself more-and-more at a bypass with the other critics. The series is entertaining, but it's hardly doing laps around the competition.

Review: Winnebago Graveyard #1

Many years ago, my parents opted to buy an RV, and we went on a cross country trip across America. We actually all flew to Florida to buy the damn thing to drive all the way back to the West coast. We actually had that RV for an absurdly long time for only going on, I think, one other trip with it. And then, they sold it. I don't really know what the moral of that story is, but it's part of what made me want to check this book out. See, I was a skittish kid for a long time. So much so that I flat out refused to even watch horror films (although, some gradual encouragement in my teens eventually got me to break out of that). So during that RV trip, I was pretty frequently scared of someone or something "getting" us. Winnebago Graveyard is that fear turned comic book, or at least it endeavors to be. And when I saw Steve Niles's name attached on top of that, I knew I had to at least give it a try.
