Review: The Last Siege #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Like most people that are likely going to pick up this comic, I knew nothing about it going in. At the time of writing this, I believe that it’s recently announced so there might not be a ton of awareness for The Last Siege. The first thing to note is that the meaning behind the title completely escapes me, but that’s perfectly fine. Not every title needs or should be easy to decipher.

Review: Flavor #1

By Dustin Cabeal

There has been a slew of cooking-themed comics in the past year. While manga has always dominated the genre and found new and interesting ways to present it, the Western comics are still getting their footing. The problem tends to be the story itself. The rules for cooking and the setting are always interesting, but then the stories seem to spend more time reminding you of the concept than building on it. Unfortunately, Flavor isn’t looking to be much different.

Review: Infidel #1

By Dustin Cabeal

With a title like Infidel, your comic is going to get a lot of looks. Not necessarily positive ones because I mean do I really have to explain the landscape of society in a review for a comic book? I don’t think so either. At any rate, I recall getting a few comments about this book when I posted the press release, and the concern was how the subject matter was going to be handled.

Review: Gideon Falls #1

By Dustin Cabeal

There are points in some creator’s careers in which they hit a point of almost superstardom in the industry. They can do no wrong with their fan base, and their fan base buys a lot of comics. You can likely think of countless creators like this, some of them are still at that level while others have fallen from grace. I have stopped this practice after years of over-inflating comics that didn’t deserve it because the writer or artist was, “really good.” It’s a dangerous practice, and it’s one that I, unfortunately, see that happening to Jeff Lemire more and more. That’s not to say that he doesn’t make good comics. He actually has a couple out at the moment that are better than good, but that doesn’t mean everything he releases is gold.

Review: Void Trip #1

By Justin McCarty

The Universe is real big, man. Void Trip is a new comic published by Image coming out next month. Created by Ryan O’Sullivan and Plaid Klaus, Void Trip is a psychedelic road trip comedy in the vein of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, their words, not mine. In fact, O’Sullivan bills this as Guardians of The Galaxy meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Those are big shoes to fill. If you want to invoke drug culture and free-thinking, Fear and Loathing is a good place to start, though. I get the vibe, but I would amend all that by saying this is more of a Cheech and Chong meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy kind of story. There is a lot here, and I think it was amazingly executed.

Review: Shirtless Bear-Fighter #1

By Dustin Cabeal

The punctuation for Shirtless Bear-Fighter is very important. I could just type examples over and over, but that would probably only amuse myself since no one that’s read a comic book for joy has every thought about grammar. If they did, then they would see the abysmal state of the English language in comics. We’re not here to talk about that or how I contribute to that statement weekly, but rather we’re here to take an early look at Shirtless Bear-Fighter from Image Comics.
