Review: Rumble v2 #1

Rumble #1 does something very few continuing stories achieve successfully. It tells a gripping story that acknowledges it’s past issues but still welcoming to new readers. After a brief introduction into the history of the world and its varying players, the reader is thrown into an entirely original story with interesting characters and a well thought out mythos.

Review: Sherlock Frankenstein & the Legion of Evil #1

Apparently, I am just out of the loop when it comes to new comic books. Because this book came out of nowhere for me. I love Black Hammer and I also love Leff Lemire's writing, and I especially love David Rubin's weird/beautiful art. So, right off the bat Sherlock Frankenstein & the Legion of Evil is a win-win-fucking-win book for me. But, really, when you think about it how good can a spin-off book actually be, right? Why make a spin-off at all, other than as a cash-grab? These are a few of the things I initially thought about the book before I even read it. And let me tell you, fuck all that noise. Sherlock Frankenstein & the Legion of Evil is a solid first issue, and a great book overall, as a companion piece to Black Hammer and also as its own thing entirely. Plus, the title's pretty great, too.

Review: Black Hammer #9

Black Hammer is a book I have read and enjoyed as long as it’s been coming out. But I never reviewed it. I’m not really sure why this is. Maybe because I didn’t want to write a review that was basically just OMG GUYS THIS FREAKING BOOK IS AMAZING, TOTALLY AWESOME YES. But I decided to put all that out of my mind and review Black Hammer #9. Mainly because David Rubin is doing the art in this issue. Black Hammer is a great book with solid characters and intrigue and mystery. It’s the perfect book for the comic reader who loves superhero stories but is tired of all the same old bullshit. But you already know that. This is a review for the ninth issue. You know what the overall story is about. But what about this issue, on its own, away from all the other issues that came before it?

Review: Ether #5

Ether takes the investigative murder-mystery of Sherlock Holmes and infuses it with childlike imagination and adventurous fantasy. Picture a perkier Dresden Files, but replace the main character with an emotionally distant scientist, and give him a giant, purple, chain wearing monkey beast as a sidekick. Matt Kindt and David Rubin have been laying the groundwork for 4 issues now, and with this volume one finale they provide a satisfying conclusion that will leave readers begging for more.
