Review: DC Holiday Special 2017 #1

By Jonathan Edwards

It’s December, so that means ‘tis the season for holiday specials like this one, and ‘tis the season for starting reviews off with the phrase “’tis the season.” In the wake of Rebirth last year, I was looking forward to DC’s DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1. It seemed like a great way to celebrate the season and the overall success of the relaunch. Unfortunately, if my LCS had gotten any copies (I didn’t ask, but I’m sure they did), they’d sold out of them before I got there. This was also before I started reviewing for Comic Bastards (if only barely), so I didn’t have access to any review copies. Oh well, I told myself, and I figured it maybe wouldn’t have turned out to be that good of a read anyway. In retrospect, that seems like an unnecessarily sour attitude to take during the most wonderful time of the year. And, the best way I can think of to make up for that is to take an optimistic look at DC Holiday Special 2017 #1.

Review: Wonder Woman - Annual #1

By Ashley Gibbs

I like Wonder Woman, I like who she is and what she stands for and find her to be a good role model. She stands side by side with Superman and Batman forming a trinity of super hero awesomeness. Wonder Woman Annual #1 comes out at a perfect time as the Amazonian princess is also coming to the big screen in her own movie and I feel this book is an excellent collection of short stories that anyone can can enjoy. You do not need to read any prior comic to understand what’s going on, this is great for anyone who is maybe only discovering the character for the first time thanks to the movie or who is like me, a casual fan who still enjoys the character. While it does help to have at least some knowledge of the DC world, the writing no way depends on you having this which is a strong point.

Review: The Old Guard #2

By Levi Remington

Andy reminisces about history, a new immortal is shown the ropes, and Copley is experiencing some technical glitches in this week’s issue of The Old Guard. It wouldn’t be a Greg Rucka Joint without a complex woman protagonist and a heavy military presence, but it’s his experience with these elements that helps transform the familiar into something truly fresh and exciting. Read ahead for my complete thoughts before “Zeus’ scabrous cock” wakes me from an inconvenient dream.

Review: Wonder Woman #8

By Mike Badilla

Last we left off, WW just did some adventuring in a cave saving some kids from being sacrificed to some weird ol' ancient God, all the while being accompanied by some cheetah woman that was once a regular ol' woman. Not that women are regular, they're all amazing and beautiful creatures and deserve respect. This issue starts in a mansion, with a man angrily explaining to his child's teacher that she is not to be teaching his daughter about Greek mythology, as it is imaginary and imaginations are not good for children's growth or whatever. The woman tries to explain that his daughter is super smart and cool, but that dad doesn't even care. No way, mythology. We are then flashbacked* to a time many years ago when Mrs. Cavendish, the teacher, is just a wee little girl, or maybe a teen, doing as all teen girls do; running around with a cardboard sword and shield and doing some hardcore LARPing action, when she is suddenly called away to have some time with his lordship, who has beckoned her.

Review: Wonder Woman #7

By Mike Badilla

I like Wonder Woman, but I find myself not reading it very often, which is why I chose to do this book. I also chose this book because of the cover; I have never seen a Wonder Woman book look like this. The art is very different, dark and detailed and a little gross, which intrigued me. We start out on issue 7, which of course means there is story that I will have missed out on, so let's continue anyways. We find our heroine, along with some kind of Cheetara-esque woman, breaking some people out from a cell inside of a cave.
