Review: Grimm Fairy Tales #5

By Ashley Gibbs

Fairy tales are something I personally grew up with, be it in book form or told through visual media. I do admit I’m new to this particular comic series but I have seen it before in stores and wondered what it was all about, Grimm Fairy Tales #5 gave me that chance. Despite it being the fifth issue, I jumped in completely blind. Good news is that I didn’t feel too lost, sure I could tell there was a history with the characters and story being told but I was given enough basic information to follow along and enjoy the story. Zenescope needs to decide if it’s actually trying to get new readers or if this reboot was just for their current crop of supporters because this first issue felt like an attempt at both. I was curious what Zenescope would do after ending their longest running titles and truly one of the longest running small press monthly titles as well. The answer it seems is, give Sela a daughter and go back to their roots. Which isn't bad. I'm kind of for it actually because I think shared universes in comics have become a pain. Everyone wants one, but even the big two are struggling to make people care about all aspects of the universe. I'm glad to see at least one publisher return to making stories that are self-contained rather than a part of a whole. We'll see how that story actually turns out though because Joe Brusha is writing it and while he's been better lately, he still has plenty of room for improvement.
