Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #46

By Cat Wyatt

After the big revelation in the last issue, it’s safe to say that it’s been a long two weeks waiting for Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #46 to drop. It’s finally here, and it comes with the title Darkstars Rising Part Three Death Sentence. If that title makes you worried, don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #45 continues the "Darkstar Rising" plot that’s been running for the last few issues, and man has it been an intense run. With the Darkstars going after every ranking criminal with lethal force, the Green Lanterns have found themselves desperately seeking ways to stop them.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps is back, and so are the Darkstars. I’ve been excited about this plot, so it feels like the wait between each issue is insanely long (I know, I’m super impatient like that). A quick recap, for those that have missed any issues; The Controllers created a force called the Darkstars, intending to control them and have them rival the Green Lanterns. While they succeeded in the later, the former not so much. Now the Green Lanterns are assembling their collective allies to try and deal with the great threat here.

Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #43

In the last issue of Hal Jordan, we had the dramatic introduction of the Darkstars. Even since I’ve been anxiously waiting for this issue, as I can’t wait to see what happens next with them. It’ll be interesting to see what a more lethal version of the Green Lantern Corps will look like!

This issue starts off, unsurprisingly, with many criminals and villains dead. All over the galaxy known criminals are being routinely tracked down and taken out. In some cases, we have proof (witnesses) that the criminals attempted to surrender before they were cut down. The most striking example of this was on Planet Xix. A life sentence prison was attacked – all the guards were fine, but every prisoner was killed. The guards and people are outraged – their planet had abolished the death penalty, and they clearly don’t appreciate another force stepping in to override their rules and wishes.

Issue 42 of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps has us starting up a new plot. That isn’t to say that Zod isn’t still a threat (because he absolutely is), but he’s likely acting in the shadows and out of sight for the moment. This issue does bring around some enemies we’ve become more familiar with as of late, which is always fun. It also introduces a new threat (well, new to rebirth I should say).

The last issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps left us off at a rough point; the mission to rescue Hal Jordan is underway, but as of the end of the issue hadn’t actually completed. When last we saw him, Hal was finally up and fighting again, a happy sight to be sure. I’ve been anxious for the past two weeks, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that has been looking forward to this rematch.

Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #39

In the last issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps we saw Kyle safely back on Mogo, but obviously, Hal is still in quite a bit of danger. Granted, he’s probably doing better with the situation than a lot of people would be (even other Green Lanterns), but it still isn’t an ideal place to be. I’ll admit I’ve been a bit worried about our hero.

With Kyle gone to rally the troops (because this is the Green Lantern Corps we’re talking about, there’s no way they’ll abandon Hal to die), Hal is left alone to deal with Zod and his creepy family. Thankfully Zod seems more than willing to give a monologue or two, giving us a better idea of his plan.

This was an interesting issue, to say the least. We start off with both Hal and Kyle awfully beat and bloody, trapped in a jail cell on Planet Jekuul, now home to Zod (and his family, of course). Kyle appears to be worse off than Hal, though that could also have something to do with Hal’s physiology for all we know.

Issue number 37 of Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns is starting a new plot – and this one was not one I was expecting (okay, not the full truth – I knew to expect it once I saw the cover, but before that, it never crossed my mind). Zod is back from the Phantom Zone, and he’s looking to start fresh. So, of course, the odds were likely that a Green Lantern would come across them first. Just looking at the cover, it’s clear that Hal gets put up against one of Superman’s greatest villains. I honestly had never thought about this fight, so I can’t tell you who I’d expect to win. Probably whoever had more time to prepare? (which doesn’t look good for Hal, in this case).

Issue 35 left us off with four of the Green Lanterns rushing into danger in an attempt to rescue Ganthet and Sayd. We knew that time was short, as Sayd was due to be the next victim to the Controllers plans. Thankfully our heroic team arrived in time, but the fight was cut short by the end of the issue. Now we finally get to see what happens.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #32 continues Bats Out of Hell plot, bringing us None More Black. The events in this issue take place during Dark Nights: Metal, bringing us back to the Multiverse. In this issue, the events that occur are split into two different times, “then” and “now.” Then appears to be before everything went downhill, while now is showing us with our heroes either in a fight or rapidly losing it.
