Normandy Gold's Steve Scott Chats 70s Influences of Graphic Novel

I approached the series Normandy Gold as a crime fiction drama. Essentially, casting the actors, finding my set references, etc...

The most important casting for me to realize was that of Normandy. The writers recommended various actors or people of importance for the inspiration of much of the cast, but Normandy was mine to figure out. She needed to be a very strong, intelligent and enduring Woman that can transform throughout the series while still being recognizable to the reader. For her, one such inspiration I chose to use was the actress Lauren German. Lauren can be found in the hit TV series “Lucifer” playing Detective Decker.

Review: Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini #1

I was not familiar with Cynthia von Buhler before picking up this title. For those that don’t know she is a contemporary artist that has been creating art that ranges from illustrations and fine art to theater and performance art. Perusing her Wikipedia page and website gives you quite a lot of insight into how her style informed this comic. Minky Woodcock The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini is a new ongoing title from Titan Comics’ Hard Case Crime series. Its protagonist is a somewhat plucky wannabe private detective that, as the title suggests, gets herself involved in a mystery that centers on the charming illusionist Harry Houdini.

From Titan Comics’ and Hard Case Crime we have the English translation of the most recent comic adaptation for the Millennium Series novels written by Stieg Larsson. This adaptation was written by Sylvain Runberg with art by Manuel Carot Gonzalez. It’s a sequel to The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo published earlier this year, which finishes up this October. With another novel in the series due out this month, Titan may have seen an opportunity to do an English translation of the acclaimed French comics adaptation.

Review: Normandy Gold #1

Hard Case Crime is one of my favorite publishers. They put out some great classic crime novels as well as modern day pulps. Recently, they have teamed up with Titan to release comic books, pairing crime writers with artists. I think this is awesome. And when I saw Megan Abbott’s name attached to this book, I was immediately pumped. I’ve read a few of her novels and think she’s a great writer. And I was interested to see her try her hand at writing a comic. Normandy Gold is co-written with Alison Gaylin, another crime writer. Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with her work, but will most likely be checking it out now after reading this comic book.
