Review: The Weatherman #2

By Dustin Cabeal

The long await return of The Weatherman! At least for me. One of the perks of reviewing comics is that on occasion you get to read comic early, such was the case with this series, but the catch is that you’re then locked in waiting longer than normal for the next issue. I was very excited to read more of this series after the first issue, and now that excitement has only grown.

What I’m going to eventually say in this opening is going to sound like a slam against Image and really, I can’t help if anyone takes it that way. It has been a long ass time since I was excited about a new Image title. While I enjoy the fact that Image is the number three publisher and feel that they produce a wide variety of comics that disrupt the superhero conglomerate, at the end of the day their crutch is sci-fi fantasy stories, and lately, it’s been pretty dull when a new title is released. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that they’re bad titles, but much like superhero inc. and superhero llc., there are so many titles that it all starts to feel a bit average and overpraised. Okay, that last part is a bit of a slam, but saying all comic books are great is like saying every movie, tv show, and video game is great. Be consistent is all I’m saying, anyway.

Review: Shirtless Bear-Fighter #2

By Daniel Vlasaty

If you’re like me (and just about most other people in the whole goddamn world) then you love big dumb action movies. I know I do. They’re my favorite. Especially if they’re from the 80s or early 90s. That’s when they were the best. So much bad hair and ridiculous dialogue. They were corny and exciting and not completely original – but that didn’t matter because you knew the good guy was going to save the day and get the girl, and they were usually good for some solid laughs, and over-the-top deaths, and a shit-ton of explosions. You know, the good stuff. This is how I feel about Shirtless Bear-Fighter. Watching him fly his bear plane to fight some bearrorists rampaging through the city. This is the vibe I get every time Burke gets that faraway look in his eyes and dips into the ever-changing story of his past. It’s like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie from a bygone era, just with evil sentient bears, a half-pig hillbilly warlock, an evil toilet paper company, and a man that hates bears so much he’s made a promise to himself and the memory of his fallen love to punch every motherfucking bear he sees.

The punctuation for Shirtless Bear-Fighter is very important. I could just type examples over and over, but that would probably only amuse myself since no one that’s read a comic book for joy has every thought about grammar. If they did, then they would see the abysmal state of the English language in comics. We’re not here to talk about that or how I contribute to that statement weekly, but rather we’re here to take an early look at Shirtless Bear-Fighter from Image Comics.
