Review: Motor Crush #11

After the crazy ending of issue #10, Motor Crush #11 starts out almost feeling calmer by comparison. The issue starts with Bea and Lo hanging out in one of the racing track bars (needless to say it probably is really weird for Lo, her not being out there helping out and all), while Yo-Yo is getting ready for her big race (apparently her stuff made it through just fine).

Review: Motor Crush #10

With a dramatic cover like the one accompanying issue #10, it’s going to be hard to resist reading this one. Motor Crush #10 starts off with Sullivan Swift (Dom’s father) in a ghastly situation (which maaaay be putting it a bit mildly since I’m pretty sure he’s about to be tortured).  The real question is, does Dom know that her father is in danger, and more importantly, does she even know where to find him?

I read the first story arc of Motor Crush and liked it well enough. It wasn't anything ground breaking, but it was fun, stylish, and had a decent enough dose of intrigue. Plus, it left off on a pretty big cliff hanger. So let me say up front, this issue does not resolve that. In fact, it does the opposite. Motor Crush #6 is a prequel issue focusing on Sully while Domino's still a child. It also happens to touch on how Sully lost his leg and the rise of Crush in Nova Honda. All in all, it feels more like a standalone story than the beginning of a new arc. And though it does do a pretty good job of showcasing Sully's character, it does feel somewhat at the cost of Domino losing some of her own agency.

Review: Motor Crush #1

Here's a high concept for you. Motorcycles on drugs. Pricks the old ears up, don't it? However, that seems to be the Image publishing model right now, not so much selling us stories as much as idea fragments that are as abstract as they are catchy. Image adverts don't have to sell you a compelling story, rather relying on the cover copy that comes off like free association word salad. “A comic about beatnik elves, a time-traveling ocelot, and Lyndon Baines Johnson with a chainsaw.” I blame Manhattan Projects for this.
