The last volume had a good setup for what will be the concluding arc of this segment of the series, which is a mouthful, but that’s the only way to put it. Soma and his dad have put everything on the line, with Daddy dearest agreeing to join the Evil Dean of the institute should his son/side lose in a group battle. It's drama at its finest.

Well if this wasn’t the volume, I was fucking waiting for! Since I first started with this series, the biggest question I had has always revolved around Soma’s dad. As more small details emerged, it only made him more and more curious to the reader. With this latest arc, it became clear that whatever Azami was up to involved Joichiro.

Hey, remember the Fall Classic? When Soma was up against Subaru? Yeah, this is pretty much the same thing. The entire issue is dedicated to the build-up of the battle between Soma and Akira. Granted, the build-up isn’t much of the story because Yuto Tsukuda really likes spending a lot of time with the cooking and the judges.

The amazing thing about the shonen style of storytelling is that something can reach twenty-one volumes and yet the story hasn’t completed a full year. It also makes me wonder how long I’ve been reading Food Wars! for since I started reviewing and reading this series from the start of the trades. While the return of Erina’s father has provided some great moments, the overall story seems to be lacking a real overall cohesiveness. There have been plenty of loopholes for Soma and his gang to skid by, be it Erina’s father letting her stay at Polar Star or Soma’s challenges. It hasn’t been all bad, but there have been some languid moments.

Okay, that cover is just weird. You have to read the volume to understand it and even then… it’s weird. But hey, nineteen volumes later it’s probably hard to come up with covers that are super interesting and different without relying on T&A. Let’s all just be happy that it’s a deer and not a woman dressed as a deer because we know how that would look.

Bombshell, bombshell, bombshell… bombshell! There’s probably more than four bombshells in this volume, but you get the idea of just how important this volume is to the series. When last, we left Soma, he was facing off against the leopard tank top wearing douche in a rigged Shokugeki. Everything was on the line, but no true outcome insight.

Did you read the last volume? That twist huh? It is so damn good. It completely refreshes the direction of Food Wars! because let’s be honest, Soma just continuing to have battle after battle and winning and losing and growing would have been fine, but not interesting. Now, now some real character development can go down, and I would say that the ending of this volume is just the start to that.

I can honestly say that I did not see this story direction happening. Volume Sixteen completes Soma’s challenge of the food festival, and if you were feeling burnt out on all the festival challenges, well don’t worry, apparently, the creator was too so he kind of brushes this one under the rug in favor of what he reveals.
