Review: Dodo

By Sam King

Dodo is an original graphic novel written by Brazilian cartoonist Felipe Nunes. It is a translated work published by BOOM! Studios/Kaboom! that was released in May of this year. It tells the story of a little girl named Laila whose parents are divorced. She finds a friend who helps her progress through a difficult time in her young life, showing that sometimes help can be found not through people, but by other means, including ourselves.

Review: Rocko's Modern Life #5

By Hunter T. Patrick

Such a fun time. Rocko’s Modern Life #5 does something very hard to do, it both holds the legacy of its past but also embraces the future (our present). Rock gets a cell phone, never having one before. This occurrence has something all too familiar for most people as he gets addicted to his phone and thus comes the humor. Rocko quickly becomes a success online with help from his dog. Rocko being mixed with everything has a lot of great laughs. Rocko fans will be happy with this comic, but maybe not the easily forgettable back-up included. Read this and expect fun similar to the television series.

Review: Garfield: Vacation Time Blues #1

By Hunter T. Patrick

Let’s start this review with the conclusion. Do not buy this comic. Price should not be a factor in most reviews, but if you are reading this and wondering, it is not worth the 7.99 price point. For the length it is (double sized comic) it should be 5.99 max, yet it is not. It contains two stories, the first average, the second poor. Garfield is a character who typically works best in small doses and one-liner (comic strips), not a comic of this size. They can only do the same jokes so many times. There are some good jokes in there, but those are few in between.

Review: R is For Reptar (One-Shot)

By Sam King

The original Rugrats television show went off the air just over ten years ago. Although my family didn’t have cable while I was growing up, I had both Rugrats feature-length films on VHS (I’m really dating myself now, huh?). I really enjoyed Rugrats, enough to have two video games on two different consoles and played them regularly. What I’m saying is, I know what to expect from a Rugrats story. This comic half hits the mark for me, and I can’t say it glows with the same shine as the original cartoon did when it aired. There have been rumors of Nickelodeon planning to revive the show, but for now, at least, we can keep enjoying the comics.

Review: Rocko's Modern Life #1

By Justin McCarty

After twenty years Rocko’s Modern Life is back. Its last new episode was in 1996 and the comic was last published in 1994. Originally a failed comic pitch in the eighties, Rocko’s Modern Life became one of Nicktoon’s most loved shows. I haven’t seen an episode of RML since the nineties, I have very fond memories of it but it might not have been as good as I remember. This comic reminded me of all the reasons I loved it. It’s surreal and droll, while still being silly. I had a lot of fun reading this comic.

Review: Rugrats #1

By Jonathan Edwards

This book. This fucking book. I completely missed the announcement for it, so I was surprised to see it pop up as one of this week’s releases. I also just didn’t really know how or why anyone could do a Rugrats comic in 2017. Yeah, it was a popular show (I watched it myself back in the day), but I can’t say I’ve heard anyone clamoring for a revival, let alone as a comic book. I don’t know, I could be wrong. Either way, curiosity still got the better of me, so I decided to give it a look. And boy, was it a painful experience. Rugrats #1 does not invite us back to the wholesome children’s cartoon world of yesteryear. Oh no. Instead, it evokes those rose-tinted memories and nostalgia only to stomp all over them with the unceremonious cynicism of shitty and superficial social commentary.
