Review: Rasputin #4

I haven’t been very positive about previous issues of Rasputin, and frankly I thought missing the third issue would be the final nail in the coffin for whatever enthusiasm I had left for this series. Now having read issue four I can say that I still haven’t given up all hope for this book, but at the same time I’m still not impressed with what we’re currently getting on a monthly basis.

Review: Graveyard Shift #2

I was really impressed by the first issue of Graveyard Shift, and couldn’t wait to see where this story would go next. While I didn’t find issue two quite as impressive as the first instalment, I still think that this is definitely a series that’s worth your time.

It's hard to believe how quickly it's come round, but London Super Comic-Con is once again just round the corner. Since it first burst onto the comic-book scene just three years ago, the show has become one of the biggest pop culture conventions in the UK - and it's still growing!

Review: The Autumnlands: Tooth and Claw #3

It’s quite difficult writing these Autumnlands reviews because there are only so many ways that I can write “this series is great.” Regardless, here we go as I once again praise this series for being awesome in almost every way. Writer Kurt Busiek is doing a fantastic job fleshing out his world while also moving his story forward, while the art team of Benjamin Dewey and Jordie Bellaire also continue to impress. If you’re still not reading The Autumnlands, then you need to rectify that error as soon as possible.

Review: Ivar, Timewalker #1

It’s quite ironic that a series seemingly influenced by Doctor Who is infinitely better than Doctor Who has been for the last five years, but Ivar, Timewalker manages to not only surpass it’s inspirations but also forge an identity of it’s own - and all in one issue. If you can’t tell, I really liked this book.

Review: Deep State #3

I was initially worried that I wouldn’t be able to get back into Deep State very easily after missing the second issue, but fortunately I found myself enjoying this issue a lot despite being a little behind on what’s been happening in the series.

Review: Resurrectionists #3

With issue three, Resurrectionists is starting to get very interesting. After my confidence in the series had a small wobble after the second issue, I’m happy to say I’m now backing this book once again. The third installment sees some interesting plot developments, some good action scenes, and some nice reveals – although I do feel that the series is still a little too mysterious for its own good at times. Even still, this is an independent title that is shaping up very solidly indeed, and one that is definitely worth your time and money.

Eternal Warrior: Days of Steel #3

I for one am very happy this mini-series is over. While the first chapter felt weak, I was initially interested in what Peter Milligan’s take on the Eternal Warrior would be. With issue two my interest was stunted, and after reading this concluding chapter I find myself questioning many things. What was the point of this series? How did this abysmal book find its way into Valiant’s otherwise excellent line-up? I can’t hope to find answers to these questions, so instead I’ll find my closure by simply spreading the message that this book is quite frankly a waste of time and money.

Review: Resurrectionists #2

Resurrectionists is shaping up to be such a mixed bag that it was tricky assigning it a score for this review. On the one hand, the book’s plot is coming along nicely. Characters that I assume will become major players in the story are gradually being introduced and built on, and the mythology that Fred Van Lente has created is interesting and continues to be developed.

Review: Rasputin #2

When I finished this issue, I said to myself, “is that it?” I was genuinely quite surprised at how abruptly this second installment ends, but then that surprise evolved into disappointment at how slowly this book is moving forward. In my review of the first issue of Rasputin I said that it was flawed but had potential, and I still feel that way about the book now. But I’m starting to wonder just how long this book will take to fix the flaws that are currently weighing it down.

Review: The White Suits

As someone who is fascinated by Russian history and the Cold War era, I was expecting The White Suits to be right up my alley. It follows the story of FBI agent Sarah Anderson as she attempts to track down the mysterious White Suits, a gang who savaged the Russian underworld in the days of the Cold War, and also the people who killed her father.

Review: Resurrectionists #1

Since I started reading comics some four years ago, Fred Van Lente has fast become a creator I pay attention to. His stories are always fun, but often they’re also able to stir some real emotions in the reader - meaning they’re not to be brushed off lightly in the way that some light-hearted tales are.

Review: Tooth and Claw #1

Tooth and Claw is the latest title from Kurt Busiek, whose previous work on books such as Astro City and Marvels has been adored by fans across the world. With such a good reputation a lot was expected from Busiek’s newest offering, a book that he has described as a “big, sprawling fantasy series about animal people.”

Review: Eternal Warrior – Days of Steel #1

Since it relaunched in 2012, Valiant has become one of the most reliable publishers in terms of printing quality titles. X-O Manowar, Harbinger and most recently Armor Hunters have all been hugely entertaining reads, and so it was with great excitement that I picked up Eternal Warrior – Days of Steel.

Review: Rasputin #1

Rasputin, the so-called “mad monk” of Russia who gained influence in the days of the last Tsar, has fascinated many history-buffs for decades. He was mysterious, said to have healing powers, and thanks to his creepy appearance has seen many creative types re-imagine him as something even stranger than he actually was.
