Review: The Reflection E.01
By Shanel Kamara
Okay, I’ll be very frank here; I’m drawing a blank about what to think about this anime series. The Reflection is very distinct to any other anime series to air; in terms of the style, the plot, and the setting, The Reflection resembles an American comic. I am fully aware that the anime series is a project that Studio DEEN and the illustrious Stan Lee have worked on, but I still can’t get my head around the notion of an anime series that looks as if it’s come straight from the pages of a comic book. It’s literally as if I’m watching a comic book series brought life.

Unboxing: Loot Anime - July 2017
By Dustin Cabeal
Still July so this still counts. Really I got it on Saturday, but then I forgot about it until today. The first thing you're going to see me talk about is some One-Punch Man figures. I thought the plastic gave them a weird glare, turned out to just be a terrible paint job on the figures. I've included some pictures below because it is really bad. Part of it is faded, but in pictures, it looks like a glare so I couldn't even capture the full extent of how shitty they are. It was disappointing, to say the least, because they finally got something One-Punch Man related into the damn box. Also, I flipped through the KonoSuba manga. If you listen to the podcast or follow my manga coverage then you know that I'm a huge fan of the show. The manga was pretty much the entire first season condensed down. Disgusting.

Review: Marzi vol. 1 – Little Carp
By Dustin Cabeal
Reading the description for Marzi is a cheat. It tells you too much, and that spoils the journey that Marzi takes you on in this first volume. First and foremost, don’t read the description, but do read Marzi.

Review: Save Me, Pythia vol. 1
By Dustin Cabeal
Save Me, Pythia is 100% what you’d want from a manga set in ancient Greece. The story follows Pythia, a teenager working at the temple for Apollo. Apollo himself has taken to Pythia, and after remembering to move the sun to night, he goes to the temple as a beggar looking for a place to stay the night. He reveals himself, in several different meanings of the word “reveal,” to Pythia and expects to have sex all night long with her. Instead, he gets rocked in the face and gut because Pythia isn’t having any of that shit. Her reward is a curse from Apollo in which she’ll be able to see the future.

Review: Food Wars! vol. 19
By Dustin Cabeal
Okay, that cover is just weird. You have to read the volume to understand it and even then… it’s weird. But hey, nineteen volumes later it’s probably hard to come up with covers that are super interesting and different without relying on T&A. Let’s all just be happy that it’s a deer and not a woman dressed as a deer because we know how that would look.

Review: Twin Star Exorcists vol. 9
By Dustin Cabeal
Volume nine isn’t the strongest volume of Twin Star Exorcists. There’s a lot of great little moments and several important reveals, but overall the battles and random talking goes on for far too much of the volume. Hopefully, it’s not indicative of what to expect from the series going forward. It would be an absolute shame if it were to go the route of My Hero Academia and slow down the amazing pace that the story has managed to have up until this volume.

Review: S.O.S. vol. 1
By Dustin Cabeal
S.O.S. is the second Mangatravellers title I’m reviewing today, but unlike the first review, I have a harder time calling S.O.S. a manga. Really, I would still rather just call everything comics since that’s what they are and I don’t see the point of using regional terms outside of said region, but that’s for another day.

Review: My Hero Academia vol. 9
By Dustin Cabeal
It’s with a heavy heart that I say this, but I’m growing tired of My Hero Academia. The formula seems to be how can we not physically advance Deku, but still injury the fuck out of him and frankly it’s worn on me for some time. I won’t pretend that I know exactly what comes next in this story, but having mistakenly viewed some art from future chapters, it seems like this problem isn’t exactly solved, but challenged differently… a way that doesn’t look interesting in case you were wondering.

Review: Mighty Jack and the Goblin King
By Dustin Cabeal
Mighty Jack was one of the best graphic novels I read last year. I wasn’t surprised in the least that Ben Hatke already had a follow up to the series this year because he’s a machine and produces so many great stories and comics each year. It is impressive considering he writes and illustrates it all himself and the story and art never take a dip.

Review: R.u.N. vol. 1
By Dustin Cabeal
R.u.N. is the first manga I’ve read that’s not from Japan. It’s from the Greek studio Mangatellers, and while I’m not here to debate what is and isn’t a manga, I will be reviewing and labeling R.u.N. as a manga. And if you have a problem with that then know that 99% of the time I call comic books, graphic novels, a percentage of kids’ books, manga, manhwa, and manhua all comics. It’s just comics to me people.

Review: Batman Beyond #10
By Ashley Gibbs
We’ve been reintroduced to Damian Wayne, Bruce’s son with Talia al Ghul. He’s taken up his grandfather’s mantle and cause, shunning his father and the opportunity to be Batman. In the previous issue, it seemed to be the fault of the suit and its AI, at least that’s what Bruce wants to believe, but in Batman Beyond #10 Damian sets the record straight that his choices were his own. This issue is mainly exposition with some flashbacks and not much action, which is a bummer but I did enjoy the father-son discussions and the look into Damian’s thought process.

Review: An Introduction to Alcohol
By Dustin Cabeal
Having read a great deal of biographical and autobiographical comics this week has been interesting. I’ve gotten to see what works and didn't and it is a delicate tight rope to walk. An Introduction to Alcohol is a collection of stories from 30 Miles of Crazy! It’s autobiographical and written and drawn by Karl Christian Krumpholz. It’s also from my home state so shout out to Colorado.

Review: Batman Beyond #9
By Ashley Gibbs
When the Batman Beyond cartoon first aired in 1999 until 2001, there was no official character who was the son of Batman. The series made a point of explaining why neither Dick nor Tim had taken up the batmantle, so the role fell to Terry. However, now we have Damian Wayne, the biological son of Bruce and Talia and the next logical question would be why didn’t he become the next Batman after Bruce was too old to handle it? Batman Beyond #9 explains this for us very well as Damian explains his story to Terry as they fight throughout the issue as well as Bruce’s own memories. It’s a good issue, even if I don’t care for the explanation given.

Review: Rise of the Dungeon Master
By Dustin Cabeal
If you haven’t gathered by the extensive amount of reviews I’m doing this week, I’ve had a lot of books sitting on my desk waiting to be cleared out. Rise of the Dungeon Master is one of the few that have been on my desk for too long. Ideally, I would have loved to have posted this review when the book released, but it’s been a hell of a summer for me off the site.
