Review: Niskeoi: False Love vol. 18
By Dustin Cabeal
Much like the main characters of this book, I think I might be falling in love… with the story; which is difficult to admit since it has wasted so many opportunities and picked the familiar path of the harem genre time and time again. Perhaps it’s the fact that I’ve kept reading it that I’ve become so invested or that I watched two seasons of the anime to see how it all started. Whatever it is, this volume got me. Now, that doesn’t mean it’ll keep me because this all hinges on what happens next.
Review: Food Wars! vol. 14
By Dustin Cabeal
It’s the second test of the Stagiaire Challenge and Yukihira has been sent to work with the chef that he challenged during the spring… challenge. You know what? They have far too many season theme challenges. Hell, I’m not even sure it was spring… summer? Doesn’t matter. Yukihira is working in Shinomiya’s kitchen, the man that failed Megumi.
Review: Doctor Crowe #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Doctor Crowe is an anthology or sorts in that there are four separate stories, but they’re all written by Corey Fryia, and each story has a different artist. It’s very similar to what other publishers do on annuals in which they invite different creators to tell a variety of stories with a set of characters, but in this instance, it’s one man telling the stories. I’m not opposed to that; I just wish it had a damn name beside "anthology."
Review: Prospects #1
By Dustin Cabeal
While looking at the cover for Prospects, I instantly played the “one of these things is not like the other” game and focused in on the guy dead center. I knew in a heartbeat that he was going to be the main character due to his annoyed look and disheveled appearance.
Review: Armoured Science Kung-Fu Cats #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Armoured Science Kung-Fu Cats where’s its influences in its title. It is part TMNT, part Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and part cat internet videos. If you want ten seconds of joy, look up cats and cucumbers, no more than ten seconds, though, any longer, and you’ll question life choices you’ve made leading you to this point.
Review: Occultic;Nine E.01
By Dustin Cabeal
The vague premise I read for this series paired with the genre, gave me every reason I needed to check out Occultic;Nine. Side note, stop it with the weird shitty punctuation that’s added to these animes. As a reviewer, it’s annoying to write something intentionally wrong. Not that I’m perfect, but at least when I write something wrong I usually don’t know that I am.
Trailer Time: My Two Dads with Logan, Xavier and X-23
By Dustin Cabeal
First off, the only difference between the regular trailer and the red band trailer is one scene. The scene that's acting as the still image above. Claws through the head... now you're dead.
This trailer is okay. Clearly they're going for Old Man Logan without the rest of the Marvel Universe and staying in the confines of the licenses that Fox has.
Review: Those Dark New Hampshire Woods II
By Dustin Cabeal
The first volume of Those Dark New Hampshire Woods was weird, gross, and overall had a presence unlike anything else in comics. Reading it felt like the first time I picked up a MAD Magazine and found its contents to be unlike anything I had experienced before. The second volume of Those Dark New Hampshire Woods is more of the same.
Review: C21st Gods #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Cthulhu is the new zombies. That is to say that everyone has a story and it’s oversaturated the comic market. I’m completely indifferent about Cthulhu; I don’t care either way, and so it makes reading stories about Cthulhu easy to do because at the end the story needs to be the impressive part.
Review: Object 15
By Dustin Cabeal
Object 15 is an art book. There’s no story, and the theme is pretty loose. It’s also amazing to look at and very inspiring. There might not be a story per se, but I did enjoy creating my own stories based on the illustrations.
