Review: The Beauty #11

Let me start by saying I’ve been following this series since the first issue but this is the first chance I’ve had to review an issue for Comic Bastards. I’m not just jumping into a random issue and hoping for the best, I’ve actually been reading it. You can trust me. The Beauty… This series has a super cool concept that sits well with me, and so far I’ve enjoyed what creators Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley have done with it. It’s only natural that I should choose to review an issue now as the second arc of The Beauty reaches its conclusion. So first off, I’m going to give my two cents on how I think this arc has fared compared to the first.

Review: Raven #2

This week sees the release of the second issue of DC Comics's Raven, a title I have reviewed previously and enjoyed purely based on the fact I knew it’d get better with time... I had a little think about it some more once I'd read this issue and I think I seem to enjoy the miniseries DC put out more than the majority of their ongoing titles, they seem to me to be of a higher quality (that's an expert opinion, because I pull at least three quarters of what DC puts out. Review: The Lost Boys #1

The Lost Boys is one of my all-time favorite movies. I absolutely love it. Imagine my surprise, if you will, when I find out that Vertigo were putting out a comic book set in the movie universe. I had to give this one a go, just to see how they’d handled it. The story opens in Santa Carla and we’re given a little backstory about what happened in the movie. We meet the Frog brothers and Sam and Michael again. They’re all getting on with their lives. Michael’s working in a nursing home and Sam works in the local comic shop now. The Frog brothers are being the Frog brothers still, now receiving trained from Sam and Michael’s Grandpa. There’s loads of chit chat in this and then we get to Grandpa Emerson and his Santa Carla Hunter’s Society having a meeting, which is soon interrupted by some vampires… I’ll leave it there. No spoilers from me, bro.

Review: James Bond: Hammerhead #1

I don’t know what it is about Bond for me… It may be my British-ness or the fact I grew up watching the films on an almost weekly basis, but I always find myself coming back to him. I haven’t actually watched the last few 007 movies but I have been reading the comics and I’ve been finding them more entertaining than any of the movies I had watched recently (I think Casino Royale was the last I watched), so it’s good to see more comics coming out. Anyways, I’ll stop talking nonsense now. Here’s my review of James Bond: Hammerhead, published this week by Dynamite Entertainment.

Review: Grimm Tales of Terror vol. 2 #13

Review: Batman Beyond: Rebirth #1

Here we have the rebirth issue of Batman Beyond from DC Comics, written by Dan Jurgens and drawn by Ryan Sook. I’m quite fond of this version of Batman and have been since I was a kid watching the cartoon (though it was called Batman of the Future over here in the UK.) I enjoyed the last outing/series before Rebirth, so I figured I’d give this one a bash and see what’s up. With all the current books featuring Batman out right now, and the fact every one (except Detective Comics) is piss poor, I am in need of a decent Batman story. In this book, we’re given a bit of background/ a refresher on this incarnation of Batman via Terry McGinnis.

Review: Frostbite #1

This week, I’m looking at the first issue of frostbite, a new science fiction story from Joshua Williamson and Jason Shawn Alexander which is being published by Vertigo. It’s something different from this publisher, I can’t remember the last Sci-fi Title I read from Vertigo…Nope. I was going to fill in what I thought it was right there but I still can’t think what it could've been. I’m going to say this is the first they’ve put out in a while. So it’s a step in a different direction for the moment for Vertigo but for comics as a whole, it’s just another drop in the ocean. Let’s get to it…

Review: Assassin's Creed: Locus #1

I don’t think I’ve ever read a decent comic based on a video game. Ever. I usually steer clear of them and since I stopped playing so many videos games, I haven’t even been tempted to pick one up. Until now. Please understand before reading this review, I am not reading this because I’m a big fan of Assassin’s Creed. I’m reading this because I’m a fan of what this creative team are capable of. I'm interested in what they could do together. So, let’s cut the bullshit: this is my review of Assassin’s Creed: Locus #1 from Titan Comics. So this is the basic gist of Assassin’s Creed (to my understanding): There are some dudes with a machine that they use to search for things through time. Valuable things. They use the ancestors of the guys who were originally in the timeline at the point where this shit can be found. I think that’s right, right? Am I right? Does it matter…?

Review: 2000 AD - Prog 2000

Before we get into this, I have a confession to make: I am a lapsed reader of 2000 AD. I still collect it (and the megazine, I have a subscription to both, you should look into that) but here's the reality of my situation: I own a comic shop and that means I get a hell of a lot of books from there, I'm talking 100+ books a month. That's a lot of reading to be done. I also review comics here and write comics when I get the time. That usually means that I end up prioritising certain books over others and stockpiling the majority to read at a later date. I knew the 2000th issue was coming and I could not catch up in time for its arrival so I am committing a comic book sin and reading this prog out of order... May grud have mercy on my soul...
