Review: Chaos;Child E.01

By Dustin Cabeal

What the fuck is up with shows having a “semi-colon” in the title? Grammatically, that doesn’t make any sense, and as a reviewer, it’s annoying. If I had known what Chaos;Child was about I would never have watched in the first place; I struggled through it so that I could write a review that had some level of competency.

Review: Youjo Senki E.01

By Dustin Cabeal

There’s a much longer conversation to have about Japanese animation and its enjoyment of using World War II German in stories. That place isn’t here, but I don’t personally like when stories create alternate worlds in which World War II Germany isn’t the bad guy. I don’t buy it. I don’t care if it’s a story and fantasy and whatever excuse that you want to make to justify it to yourself, but for me, it’s dangerous and irresponsible. Don’t rewrite the history books for the sake of fantasy.

Review: Fuuka E.04

By Dustin Cabeal

Yeah, I’m done reviewing this show. This episode’s pacing is deliberately slow. It lingers to the point of being annoying, and it’s all to build the love triangle. Which spoiler, doesn’t fucking matter in the end. The love triangle is a façade, and so it’s even more perplexing that they’re focusing on it so much. Unless they plan to ignore the biggest event of the series, which if they do will ruin the point of the show.

Meredith Finch and Ig Guara Launch New High Fantasy in "Rose"

By Dustin Cabeal

I'm going to reserve judgment on this title. My first thoughts were that it was generic as fuck sounding and that using Meredith Finch's Wonder Woman writing to market it was a bad idea. I've yet to hear anyone say that was a good time in WW's life. But, how many creators have been there and turned it around at Image? We'll see. I'll give Rose an honest shot and hope that it can surprise me.

Review: Ether #3

By Laramie Martinez

I’m going to run this review backwards this time. For those of you who have read issues 1 & 2, you know that Ether usually ends with a flashback of Boone’s past. The structure itself is not surprising, typically in comics, as in most entertainment media, there are main plots and a subplot. With the main plots being the reason you read the book or watch the show, and the subplot being something fun or interesting on the side. In the case of Ether, however, I am just as intrigued by Boone’s past, as I am with his current mystery.

Review: Deathstroke #11

By Dustin Cabeal

If you had told me that Deathstroke was taking on the gun violence issues of Chicago, well I probably would have skipped this issue. It’s a good thing I read comics, not solicits.

Review: Hero Hotel

By Sarah Miller

Even though it’s the cutest thing I’ve read so far this year, Hero Hotel pulls no punches when it comes to showing the rude behaviour of superheroes on vacation. And they all want to relax at Hero Hotel, run by Grandma Zee and her staff, who must deal with the taxing personalities of superheroes who are taking a break from saving the world. While all the staff members interact with the lazy superheroes, Chet, the concierge, and Boomer, his cat and best bud, bear the brunt of their demands, and they even have to save the hotel from supervillains when the superhero guests refuse to lift a finger. (What else would you expect from superheroes on vacation?)
