Review: Her Infernal Descent #3

By Damien Becton

For the past two months, I’ve eagerly awaited for issues of Aftershock Comics’ Her Infernal Descent to drop. It’s unique, and one-of-a-kind premise along with truly endearing characters kept me wanting more. Although I am still on board with Aftershock’s unique title, issue number three left me with a puzzled look throughout most of the read. I’m not sure if I knew enough about art history to enjoy the book fully.

Review: Clan Killers #1

By Damien Becton

For a while now, Aftershock Comics has been one of my favorite comic book publishers since its’ launch a few years ago. They have been consistent throughout their short journey with the stories that they choose to publish and the art that they decide to commission. The last Aftershock that I picked up was Her Infernal Descent, and two issues in, it’s fair to say that I am having a complete blast with that title. So, when I saw a new #1 title launch, I was eager to dive in and give it a good read, considering Aftershock’s current lineup of titles. I am glad to say that with Clan Killers #1, Aftershock has another solid title that I am on board with.

Review: The Brothers Dracul #2

By Noel Thorne

Oh my gaaawd, vampires are real – and they’re spelt without the “e”! What is it with this series and missing letters – first Dracula without the “a” now “vampir”? Does it make the comic… creepier? Or should that be… creepir?

There is definitely a big deal of mystery that goes with Relay. The sense of enigma mixed with a technologically advanced environment results in a sci-fi story that is both familiar and unique.

Review: The Lost City Explorers #1

I have always been fascinated by stories of exploration and lost cities, like El Dorado and Atlantis. This comic so far seems to be focusing on Atlantis. To start, there is a lot of human drama going on and we get a little taste of some mystery elements that will progress as the series really gets rolling. While it is not the greatest comic I have read this year, this one has a lot of potential to become a good time, so long as the characters do not get tiresome.

Review: A Walk Through Hell #1

By Garrett Hanneken

An ominous warehouse filled with dread and those who go in do not come out the same if they come out at all. This appears to be the main focus for the series or what is to be expected, but writer Garth Ennis begins the issue with some social commentary that is much more prevalent now than ever.

Review: Betrothed #1

By Dustin Cabeal

What a surprisingly charming comic. I giggled. Like actually giggled when I read the first six pages. That might not sound like much of a compliment, but laughing is easy. Making some giggle, well that takes charm.

Betrothed is a fantasy story set in high school. It’s roots feel grounded in manga in that we have a chosen boy and a chosen girl that need to save the future of their races. The catch, the charm, is that they have no fucking clue. They meet for the first time in high school, and when the guy touches the girl on the shoulder to get directions, she turns instantly violent. Through their narration and efforts of their friends, we learn that they were both filled with bloodlust upon that touch, but then also something more. I won’t tell you the rest of the scene, but it was a pleasant and fitting surprise.

So these two FBI agents walk into a warehouse…

Special Agents Shaw and McGregor handle the routine cases nowadays, which is just the way Shaw likes it. She’s pushing 40, a borderline burnout, the ghastly memories of her last investigation still clinging like shadows. McGregor is younger, more dedicated, hanging onto some measure of idealism whatever the world might throw at him.

Review: Cold War #1

By Jonathan Edwards

AfterShock has been making a pretty good name for itself over the last year or so. Their catalog of books has expanded exponentially, and they’ve maintained a decently high standard of quality across the board. So, when they first announced Cold War, it seemed to be a pretty safe bet for some quality high concept shenanigans. Unfortunately, that’s not what we get from this first issue. And, what we get instead is a jumbled and unengaging plot, characters devoid of development and/or likeability, and a blatant absence of any proper reason to bother with any subsequent issues.

Review: Monstro Mechanica #1

By Jonathan Edwards

Leonardo da Vinci built a wooden robot. That’s pretty much all you need to hear about Monstro Mechanic #1 to know whether or not you’ll be at all interested in it. I actually saw a promo for this back in another AfterShock book (I can’t remember which one), but I only skimmed past it, so the title and the robot were the only things that stuck with me. I wasn’t even necessarily interested until I got three or four pages in and saw, yes, that was indeed Leonardo da Vinci. From there, I realized he must be the one who built the robot, settled in for a good read, and that is indeed what I got.
