The Place That's Farthest From: 'Andor' and the Star Wars Legacy
The key component to longevity and the near-universal appeal of the Star Wars franchise has always been its simplicity. A student of international artistic influence, George Lucas distilled richer, headier works down to a pastiche of oblique references and mythological constants and a critical focusing by undersung contributors Brian De Palma and Marcia Lucas resulted in a tight, perfectly-accessible adventure film that seismically redefined how popular media was packaged and presented. Beyond simply being a defining achievement in special effects, the polished gleam of binary morality at its core stood in as a radical contrast to the storytelling environment of the 1970s with its grim post-Vietnam ambiguity and despair. 'Star Wars' was the Happy Meal waiting to happen. Its hero plucky and apolitical, motivated by primal narrative impulses of thirst for adventure and romance beyond his station, his opposition unsubtlely dressed by John Mollo by way of Hugo Boss in Gestapo uniforms, pop narrative shorthand later reused by Lucas and Spielberg in their Indiana Jones films. Only a few decades removed from the very real Third Reich, Lucas needed little world building to immediately communicate the partisan lines the audience would be asked to sympathize on. Some distant conception of a Galactic Senate is mentioned to be finally dismantled. An instantaneous Holocaust is bloodlessly committed.

Review: Uncle from Another World episode 1, only I’m the uncle
By Dustin Cabeal
Anime is enjoyable for numerous reasons. From the constant chase of love to the fantastic abilities of magic, mech suits and the best fighter in the universe. They have relatable character moments; seldom do they have relatable plot lines. At its core, Uncle from Another World is about a man that’s been in a comma for 17 years. He’s woken up after the internet ruined everything cool and fun but now middle aged, he wants to connect to the familiar things that he knew from his more youthful days. Yes, there is magic and fantasy, but that core element of being middle aged and wanting youthful connections is the most relatable anime plot line I’ve ever seen. I’m speaking on a personal level because not everyone is middle aged and has fond memories of pre-internet days in which video game information came from magazines and actually needed to be fact checked and approved before printing.
The plus and minus here is that Netflix is adapting to more of a traditional release schedule with its anime and much like Komi Can’t Communicate, Uncle from Another World is being released weekly. I didn’t have this knowledge prior to going in and so I sat down expecting a binge session like with Bastard and was meet with disappointment (Note this review was written before the second episode released). I would also encourage you to listen to this week’s episode of Let’s Anime as I talk about the episode there which has a laugh track provided by me… laughing about the show as I talk about it.
Episode by Episode - Engage Kiss - A Loser and a Demon and a Man and a Woman
By Dustin Cabeal
With a story that is borderline depressing it still comes as a surprise to me that Engage Kiss has already had one of the best action sequences of the summer anime cour. Its weaknesses in the first episode are addressed in the second episode but that is not to say that the first episode does not stand out or entertain or bring you back for another episode.
Let's Anime 164 - Believe In Love Again
Dustin Cabeal/Lindsay Mallard
Youkoso, Youkoso!! Its the awkward pick up episode of the summer cour! We're talking about some brand new stuff, some kind still new stuff and wrapping Komi because we can! We hope you like Idols, dolls and three different shows about being Isekai'd because that's the episode!
Review: Deal Breaker #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Sometimes when a creator has a high concept, they focus too much on the concept and leave their characters severely lacking. That seems to be the case with Deal Breaker a story that has a main character that is forgettable, but also not very believable given their setting.
The gist of the story is easy to sum up, a man makes a wish with a coin in the fountain and gets a better life. Suddenly he’s not at a dead-end job being a security guard at a high school working with a pedophile. He has a successful career, a beautiful wife and two kids. He receives a random message saying it’s time to pay his debt which he promptly ignores because who answers messages from unknown callers? The next day his family disappears from existence one after the other until we arrive at the stereotypical scene of the husband filing a missing person’s report for his three missing family members.
Let's Anime 163 - When They Cry - Last Two Arcs
Dustin Cabeal & Lindsay Mallard
Can you hear it? The sound of them crying? No, not Lindsay and Dustin for once, but the cicadas that the show is known for.... we hope it's engrained in your brains as it is in ours. This is the final episode of the original first season of When They Cry. It is up to you as the listener to decide if we do more or not... leave a comment, send a friend our way, hell send us a bad joke or a poop emoji.
