Review: Cyko-KO! #1

By Damien Becton

Alterna Comics has been making a name for themselves by publishing not only comic books that are not only extremely affordable (they’re mostly $1.25), but also creating and publishing truly engaging and unique stories. By publishing Cyko-KO, Alterna ventures into an even more unique and uncharted territory with a 70’s sitcom inspired, 4th-wall breaking, and all-ages aimed comic. Certainly a unique premise, but it does not mean anything if it isn’t executed well. Fortunately, it is, and you’re in for a pretty good time if you’re Cyko-KO’s intended audience.

Review: It Came Out On A Wednesday #1

By Damien Becton

Newsprint is back! Alterna Comics is an indie comic book publishing company that prints their books in newsprint. And because of this, their regular books are only $1.50 - this book; It Came Out On A Wednesday, is $1.99 because it is a bi-monthly double-sized anthology book. It highlights up-and-coming creative writers and artists. This book is filled with tons of ideas and set pieces, ranging from the galactic space aliens playing cricket to a horror-inspired supernatural short story about voodoo and witchcraft. So, is this inaugural issue of the ongoing anthology worth your hard-earned $1.99? Of course, it is.

Review: Tinseltown #2

Tinseltown #2 picks up where #1 left off and is the second in a five issue limited series. This is another one of Alterna Comics current titles and it is one of the most enjoyable thus far. The story isn’t as gripping this time around by comparison to the first issue, but we are still progressing. There is still a lot of good potential swirling around in this series.

Review: Go West #3

By Sam King

Go West #3 is the final issue in a three issue limited series published by Alterna Comics. While the first two issues were decent setup, the third act and finale fails to feel all that satisfying. The violence level is the same level of intensity and awesome, but story wise… you’re basically just getting a generic western in comic form. The futuristic element doesn’t do much for the story.

Review: Go West #2

By Sam King

Go West is kind of like a blend of Jonah Hex and John Wick, but set in a post-apocalyptic future. It's supposed to be dangerous like the Old West but as a result of a barren landscape created by a war in modern times. Arthur Slade has a dark past in which he killed people and made money, similar to Jonah Hex, with his face scarred to boot (an occupational marker no doubt), but with a personal vendetta involving family and revenge like John Wick.

Review: Tinseltown #1

By Sam King

Tinseltown is an intriguing story with a solid start that seems to want to begin a discussion about the thin line that can sometimes exist between fact and fiction. This first issue is a strong start to what could be a comic that discusses truth, responsibility, gender roles and expectations, seeking dreams, and how sometimes we may settle for something different from what we hoped for to have the chance to reach what we think we desire most.

Review: Sonitus #1

By Cat Wyatt

Sonitus is a new series by Alterna Comics with a wonderfully creepy tone to the story. Fans of supernatural suspense stories would probably love to give this one a try, especially if they prefer the slower windup style of storytelling.

The main character (name not mentioned) suffers from an odd form of tinnitus; he hears strange noises all the time, but no doctor has been able to find a reason or cause for them (I’m going to assume they ruled out any psychological causes as well?). Have you ever had an ear infection where your ears started ringing? Imagine that, but louder and constant, and that’s more or less what I’m picturing the main character’s experience to be like (though I’m leaning towards the ‘more’ side of things).

Review: Go West #1

By Dustin Cabeal

Listen, for $1.50 no matter what I say; you should just check out this issue. No that said, this isn’t the best first issue. There’s a lot of effort put into this issue, and there are some decent action sequences to enjoy. It's just unfortunate that so much of the issue is spent narrating something that the artwork is able to convey in only a few pages.

Review: Doppelganger #1

By Justin McCarty

I love doppelgangers; they are one of the coolest tropes out there. The evil twin, the traveler from another dimension, and the time traveler; all versions. It’s a little hobby of mine to look for people’s doppelganger. Using the evil twin motif and setting us up to be unsure of what is real is what makes this short series interesting. Alterna continues to turn out original, imaginative comics. Whether you think newsprint is a gimmick or not, (I like it) they keep making engaging comics.

Ghost City Comics Competition - Starting May 20th

By Dustin Cabeal

Co-Founders Michael Ruiz-Unger & Tucker Tota have put together a comic book contest in the vein of a movie contest. That's the best way to look at this competition because frankly, there's not many, if any, others out there like this. We're a sponsor in that I'll be reviewing the winners of the contest. To be clear, I'm not judging the contest. No, that's an impressive list starting with Jason Aaron and ending with Max Sarin. You can read the full list and get all of the details by visiting GhostCityComics.com and let me tell you, you should do that. If you have an entry then get it ready for submission on the 20th of this month.

Alterna Comics Returns To Newsprint

By Dustin Cabeal

I have to admit that there's a bit of brilliance to this. A lot of Alterna Comics' titles are in black and white so it would be an easy transition for most. That and I'm curious to see what happens. What do the creators think? Will readers try it? Will other publisher give it a shot? It made me interested because yeah... maybe newsprint is okay for some books. Maybe the generic shit that some of the publishers pump out doesn't need all that detail in their piss poor coloring. I'm curious as hell. Oh, and they got a new logo. I'll be honest, I didn't have the old one committed to memory.
