Review: The Other Side

By Daniel Vlasaty

I’ve seen enough movies and read enough books to understand that war is not a pretty thing. I never had to actually go to war to figure that out. War is hell, as they say. It is scary and messy and fucked up. It’s honestly something that I don’t think a movie or a book or a comic can accurately capture. Again, I’ve never been to war and am only making assumptions here. But think about it. How can something like fighting in a war ever really be condensed down into a few hours on the screen or a few hundred pages in a book? We’re only shown the “juicy” parts – juicy for us, fucking hell for the people involved in the – the action and the suspense and the intrigue. We’re not really ever shown the inner turmoil or the toll it takes on the person. Maybe we are in a way that we can see, but not in a way that we can feel or anything like that. I guess what I’m trying to say here is that this book is fucked up. The Other Side by Jason Aaron and Cameron Stewart is a fucked up look at an already pretty fucked up piece of history.

Ghost City Comics Competition - Starting May 20th

By Dustin Cabeal

Co-Founders Michael Ruiz-Unger & Tucker Tota have put together a comic book contest in the vein of a movie contest. That's the best way to look at this competition because frankly, there's not many, if any, others out there like this. We're a sponsor in that I'll be reviewing the winners of the contest. To be clear, I'm not judging the contest. No, that's an impressive list starting with Jason Aaron and ending with Max Sarin. You can read the full list and get all of the details by visiting GhostCityComics.com and let me tell you, you should do that. If you have an entry then get it ready for submission on the 20th of this month.

Review: The Goddamned vol. 1

By Daniel Vlasaty

The Goddamned is written by Jason Aaron, with art from R.M. Guera – the creative team behind one of my all-time favorite comics, Scalped. I was super excited when this book was announced, but I’m sad to say that I stopped reading it when it was first coming out due to its erratic release schedule, which was most likely because Jason Aaron’s been writing like a dozen books for Marvel on top of his creator-owned titles.

Review: Southern Bastards #16

By Daniel Vlasaty

It’s been a few months since issue #15 came out, which is kind of Jason Aaron’s MO, it seems. I think I’d be pretty pissed about the delay too if the issue wasn’t so damn good. I love Southern Bastards, man. I love everything about it. I love the feel of it. I love the stink of it. I love the writing and the art. I love that this is what I imagine life in southern small towns is probably like.

Review: The Goddamned #5

By Chris Tresson

I’m not one for biblical shite. Never been a religious guy and quite frankly, I try to avoid any sort of religious stuff at all costs… But I have been reading Image Comics’ The Goddamned. It’s back from whatever happened to it and I haven’t got a fucking clue where it left off, so I’m just going to stumble through this and pretend like I remember what happened before… Let’s see what Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra have been up to.

Review: Southern Bastards #15

By Robert Larson

Southern Bastards is finally back, after a painfully long hiatus, and close to a dozen issues that were about the backstory and background of Craw County. I've been excited for this story to come back, and not just because I'm a fan of chicken-fried noir stories. We're finally moving toward some kind of narrative payoff, after what the first story arc managed to establish well over a year and a half ago. I'm pleased to say then that we what we get here lives up to the promise of the first arc. Blood is in the water in Craw County, but nothing fights more viciously than a wounded predator.
