Your First Look at CODA #2 from Simon Spurrier & Matías Bergara

Press Release

BOOM! Studios is proud to present your first look at CODA #2, the next chapter of the critically-acclaimed broken fantasy epic from Eisner-nominated writer Simon Spurrier (Sandman, The Spire) and Matías Bergara (Cannibal, Supergirl). This all-new series, which sold out at a distributor level before the release of the first issue, reveals the aftermath of an apocalypse which wiped out nearly all magic from a once-wondrous fantasy world, in which an antisocial former bard named Hum seeks a way to save the soul of his wife with nothing but a foul-tempered mutant unicorn and his wits to protect him...but is unwillingly drawn into a brutal power struggle which will decide forever who rules the weird wasteland.

Review: Motherlands #2

By Cat Wyatt

Motherlands #2 wastes no time reminding us just how scummy dear old mother (aka Scarlet Sylph) really is. By all appearances, she’s happily soaking in all the attention of being the mother of a known criminal – and by also being one of the bounty hunters going after him. It’s no wonder Tab didn’t want to have to ask her mother for help.

Review: Godshaper #6

By Dustin Cabeal

Right up until the end Simon Spurrier has little nuggets of truth and wisdom for you. This story had many layers, but the one it leaves you on with this issue is that the Gods in this story were never just religious Gods, but instead the things that people worship, celebrities, comics, movies, phones, hell relationships. It’s Spurrier holding up the mirror and saying, “This is how we act, but maybe we can do better.”

Review: Godshaper #5

After the last issue, I was left with the impression that this story could go on forever. After this issue, it’s pretty clear that the storyline is ending in the next issue. There’s a lot of surprises and twists in this issue that in hindsight you could sorta see coming if you dissected everything from beginning to end.

Review: Angelic #1

By Dustin Cabeal

My reviews today so far have consisted of an indie superhero book, a southern story about witches and now a religiously themed book starring monkeys. I’m pointing this out because all three things are comics I typically avoid, but none more than monkeys. If you’ve ever listened to the CBMFP (RIP), then you know that any story involving monkeys and submarines are an instant pass from me. If you were to put monkeys on a submarine, I wouldn’t even say the title of your comic and lose all respect for you as a creator. I would rather stop reading comics than to read about monkeys on a submarine.

Review: Godshaper #4

By Dustin Cabeal

I rarely pay any attention to solicits. They tend to just be giant spoiler sellers, but that also means that I rarely know how many issues a series is expected to run if it’s not on the cover. BOOM! varies a bit, but the majority of their mini-series run four issues which would mean we would be there. Clearly, that’s not the case since this issue sets up the story for more. Again, I don’t actually want or need a comment telling me how long the series is running for because it’s an intentional ignorance. Too many reviews give a series a pass because “Well it only had four issues” or worse, “It was originally supposed to be six.” What’s there is all I have to go on, and I won’t make excuses for a title.

Review: Godshaper #3

By Dustin Cabeal

There are quite a few things I enjoy about this issue of Godshaper, but there’s this nagging feeling that the big reveal should have been hinted at better before this issue. We’ve got to know Ennay and Bob pretty well over the last two issues, but like all relationships, there are new things to learn and discover about each other and sure, there’s the occasional bombshell to be dropped.

Spurrier To Bring The Shadow To The Modern Era

This summer, Dynamite Entertainment and Condé Nast will welcome readers back into the know with the launch of their latest incarnation of the classic pulp character the Shadow, in The Shadow: Leviathan. Launching in August, the comic-book series will feature writer Si Spurrier (X-Force, X-Men: Legacy, Judge Dredd) and artist Daniel HDR (Superman, Cyborg), who will bring the pulp icon into modern day in a tale full of deadly intrigue, gun-blazing action, and a study of the nature of evil!

Review: Godshaper #2

By Dustin Cabeal

Not the beginning I expected when last, we left Godshaper. Usually, when you leave in the middle of a fight, you find a way to continue that fight in the next issue. If it were a Marvel title, it would backtrack and take the story from another perspective or flashforward and rewind its way back to the fight again. These are the easiest way to do things which are perhaps what make Simon Spurrier’s choice interesting and a whole hell of a lot more entertaining. Because easy is boring as fuck in comics.

Review: Godshaper #1

By Dustin Cabeal

It’s not hyperbole to say that Godshaper is one of the most unique comics I’ve ever read. Whereas a lot of Simon Spurrier’s work at BOOM! has been fringe sci-fi stories, this one is much more grounded. The reason it works though is that the artist is so fucking talented. This story lives or dies by Jonas Goonface’s artwork.

I couldn't care less about the covers, but I'm enjoying getting a look inside the comic. I wonder who is coloring it as it looks a lot like the color on Daniel Bayliss' art for BOOM! Even without the lettering I'm digging what the story is presenting and can't wait to check this one out.

Review: Hook Jaw #3

By Chris Tresson

Greetings, Chum! We’re about to dive into my review of the third issue of Titan Comics’ Hook Jaw miniseries, written by Simon Spurrier and drawn by Conor Boyle. It’s been pretty good so far and we’re over halfway through with this one, so the finish is in sight… Let’s find out if it’s any good.

Review: Hook Jaw #2

By Chris Tresson

Well, let’s not fuck around here. This series is probably the best Titan Comics is publishing right now. It’s ace and has a great creative team on it and it has a shark in it. I don’t feel like I need to ramble a big introduction to it, so here we go, this is my review of Titan Comics’ Hook Jaw #2. Out this week at your local comic shop.

Review: Hook Jaw #1

By Chris Tresson

This book I’m about to review is probably one of the more interesting looking titles available at comic shops this week… This book I'm about to review is Hook Jaw #1 from Titan Comics, written by Si Spurrier with art from Conor Boyle. As far as I’m aware, this series is a reboot of a character from a British comic called Action. A comic which came and went way before my time. I’m not sure of the complete history of the character, but I’m going to go out on a severed limb and say this is the first time the character has had its own series outside of that old weekly comic and I’ve found myself wanting to review it based on the fact that it’s about a shark… and I usually pop my head in on everything Si Spurrier writes. Here we go now…

"The Power of the Dark Crystal" Coming From Si Spurrier

By Dustin Cabeal

Well... I like the creative team. Sorry if I have some reservations because it's BOOM! Sure we can lie and say it's Archaia still, but it's not and hasn't been for a while. Hence the single issues, the generic trades and all that stuff that Archaia didn't do, but probably should have. Anyway, the creative team is interesting and for that reason I'll check it out.
